Kitten? Did I miss something here?
Sorry to hear about that, Dan..(a little late).
We do tend to get attached to our animal friends, whatever they may be. Losing one can be pretty tough.
I have a little dog that I inherited in a divorce. I didn't want him at all at first, but my ex couldn't take him right away so I agreed to keep him for a while. When she finally got situated so that she could take him, I wouldn't let her have him. I had gotten too attached to him in the year that I kept him. Now he's going on 12 years old and his health is starting to fail some...I know it's going to be hard on me when he goes..he's like my little buddy now.
I have an old male english bulldog/pittbull named "BUDDAH". For those of you that had seen my no defunct website, it had pics on it of him(The Mascot of course!!) He is 13 years old . He is bowlegged, barrel chested and as GAME as any dog out there. He has never been fought, to my knowledge. I got him when he was 11 years old. I was at the animal shelter looking for a mastiff(Cudos to Doug Taylor, his choice of dogs influenced me) Of course...they had no mastiffs, so I walked by the cage of this sullen looking, quiet unresponsive PittBull/Bulldog looking dog. I immediately dismissed him as being untrustworthy due in part to his lack of responsivenesss. I talked to the kennel attendant, who instructed me that the best dog in the kennel, that was due to be put down in three days, was in kennel number #24. I walked over there and...sure enough, there was that sullen pittbull. I told her"You must be nuts, this dog doesnt even make eye contact, let alone wag his tail" then she opened the door to the cage and the thing came alive. She gave me a ball to throw to him and he retrieved the ball 40 times, most of them in midair. Not bad for an old dog eh?
I have had him for two years .Recently, he got frighened by lightening and thunder, when he was on a balconey at my apt, and he JUMPED off. I came home to find a dog with what I thought was a broken leg. Turns out, that it was a dislocated femoral head(Out of socket. I gave my food money up to have it popped back in, but it didnt stick, one week later it came back out!.The surgery costs a pretty penny, and involves either cutting the femoral head off and leaving it like that unattached, or pinnng the femur to the hip? Again, it costs $$$(Which I dont have) and he is hobbbling around on three legs(Rather well I may ad) I aminister pain meds to him, but in reality, as long as he isnt walked to much, he seems ok. Putting this guy down is the HARDEST thing I think I will ever have to do, I have not made a decision one way or the other. His quality of life has diminished greatly, but he is allready pretty old and sedentary so.... I feed him chunkc of liver and great quality dog food, take him to the beach occasionally, and walk him for short walks in the neighborhood, where he CONTINUES to stake his claim and mark his territory by dumping on neighbors lawns right in front of their dogs (I clean it up,of course)He is as smug as ever.
When he passes,I will have lost my best friend. Dogs, unlike humans, never really turn on you or act like they lke you when they dont.
End of long story.
