"J hook" myth

dw662002 Jan 17, 2011 09:51 PM

ok so i normally post on the colubrids forums but i have a question for the ball python world. Have any of you heard that a snake bearing a "J hook" pattern would produce a blue eyed lucy? the reason i ask is that i recently aquired an '09 graziani pastel in a trade. He has this style of pattern.Like i said i am a colubrids guy but i was just wondering if there was any truth to the myth or not. Thank you in advance

Pattern irregularities have proven to show that it can be used as markers to certain morph traits. Hooks, donuts, tear drops, lines within the tear drops (het red ax.) are all common markers. Pastels, yb, spotnose commonly have hooks. While lessers and mojaves commonly have donuts. Cinnies, black pastels, het reds. have tear drops…..etc…..

Clear bellies is associated with most all morph types.

I have never heard this in particular….however knowing your morphs will help you with the breeding outcome…

Pastel x pastel = super pastel
The super pastel looks like a washed out pastel….but on the genetic side of the house….that super pastel will give off a pastel gene to every hatchling it produces.

Lesser x lesser = blue eyed lucy (BEL)
…..there’s also a Mojave x lesser BEL…not to get confused with
The BEL is not completely white like “pied white” it sometimes has a light yellow dorsal stripe or a very, very slight head pattern, but in the same as the super pastel bred it and it will give off a lesser gene to every hatchling it produces.

So……

super lesser (BEL) x super pastel = all pastel lessers…in theory …..(sometimes strange things occur in nature)

As for the irregularity in patterns goes….what I mentioned in my first post with certain patterns are not necessarily stuck on certain morphs….those are just keys to help you know the morph. Some pastels have really nice tear drops and the same goes for lessers, cinnies, mojaves, Yb….and so on. I hatched out a female lesser last year that has a woma type pattern….and there’s no woma in the mix….. how do I know she’s a lesser…..because the father was a lesser and the mother was a pinstripe…..she’s just a strange looking lesser.

Just know that a normal pastel with hooks……WILL NOT produce a blue eyed lucy.

Both of my mojaves have a J on their pattern, but I have never heard of THAT being a trait of BEL producers. I have noticed a LOT of mojaves with J's, but not all of them have it.
