Azureus hiding all day...

nasr_36 Sep 27, 2003 03:10 PM

I have a juvi azureus alone in a 20g, but lately its been hiding in a u-shaped hide all day and night. Its very healthy and plump, so i know its been eating. Anyway, what could be wrong? All my temps are normal, and no changes have been made. My mantella died not long ago by unknown reasons, and i dont want this one to die.

Should i put it in a quarantine tank? Or is this normal behavior this time of year?
Thx.

How long have you had it in that tank?

When I first added my Azureus to my 29gal they hid for the fist couple of weeks, but now they are as bold as can be.

How is the tank planted? They will be shy and a bit stressed if the tank is very bare.

Its BAB substrate, with moss ontop, waterdish, Driftwood, pothos, sansevieria, and other unknown safe plants. I use flourescent lighting, and feed it FF and crickets...

any suggestions?

i got 2 juvies about a month ago and they've never been shy. today while moving things around in the tank i got one to jump on my hand and it staid there so i could move it on the other side of the tank. maybe just luck... i don't know what could be wrong with yours.. maybe just give it some time and coverage. good luck!

I guess this goes without saying...

But I imagine that different frogs can individually have different dispositions, even within the same species/morph. I have noticed this with the few azureus I have kept. My latest purchase is a bold little pig. Some of my other azureus have been much more shy, hiding frequently without losing weight. I do find that in general, the frogs become more bold with time...however, it's always best to err on the side of caution. It may not be a bad idea to move the frog to smaller quarters especially considering that it is the lone inhabitant of a 20 gallon tank (am I correct?) Food probably gets lost very easily. But if the frog shows no other signs of illness (ie lethargy, weight loss, uncoordinated behavior) then I think it is OK.
