Waking Up!

pyromaniac Jan 21, 2011 10:17 AM

I have my pair of 09 striped Pacifics in a big breeder tank with ample space for warm and cool hides. The female ate all through the winter and preferred the warm hide, but her mate hung out in the cool spots until just a few days ago, when I saw him in the warm hide. So I brought him out and offered food:

and he was very interested, breaking his seasonal fast which had begun last September with a batch of pinks. I fed her a hopper which she ate promptly even though she had not shed yet, finishing her shed the next morning. It is most heartening when my snakes begin to feed again! It has been a long winter...

An old picture of them from last fall. Because she ate all winter she is bigger now so he has some catching up to do.

Hey Pyro,

Those stripers are looking good! Pushing three feet or so about now? All of my snakes are still "down under" for a few more weeks. Will see them again around the middle of Feb. Do miss them though...

When the snakes wake up it is like getting all new snakes, without having to go out and buy any!

Most agreeable! I'm waiting about three more weeks or so since I have several wild caughts including (now) a 2010 Sonoran that I picked up near home in late October. They grow like weeds at that stage.

Very nice looking stripers Bob. I'm glad you have someone to feed besides your babies.

BTW the wife's hairless rats have some pups that are growing hair. More like peach fuzz really. The mom was a nervous Nelly the first week or so. She wouldn't even let the male in the nest. After that she settled down nicely and let's the wife handle the babies always keeping a close eye on her though.

My bull snakes are waking up, too. Alfonzo has broken his fast and his sister will be breaking hers pretty soon. Even the baby pyros are eating more again. I have turned all the heaters back on to warm everybody up. If they don't want to warm up they can go to the cooler spots and sleep more. Once I see them on the warm spot I offer food.

Alas, my rat experiment is not going to be repeated.

How the mama rat appeared to me after she gave birth! I will stick with my friendly little mice from here on out!

One of several tubs of weanlings; good thing everybody's snakes are waking up! As it is, I have donated a major portion of my frozen mice to a local wildlife rescue. They help injured raptors and owls.

My 08 Pacific Lorenzo came out from his winter sleep and asked me for food yesterday. It seems all my male Pituophis are waking up faster than the females.
