mortar/ concrete mixing tubs

ballfan Sep 27, 2003 04:47 PM

Has anyone had experience with the mortar/ concrete mixing tubs sold at home depot to use as rat holding containers?

Both sizes have a hole on one of the handles used to hang the tub on a nail and i'm afraid it could serve as a chewing spot for rats to escape.

any info would be appreciated.

Ben

P.S. I bought the one from loews but the material it is made of is way inferior to the one from Home Depot.

I currently am using mortar/concrete tubs that I bought from Lowes. So far they have seemed to work, but you have to make sure the bottom or sides don't dent too much or it will give the rats a place to start chewing. I haven't compared the tubs with the ones at Home Depot. What size are the ones you are using from Home Depot?? The ones I bought from Lowes are approximately 28"x20"x6". If they have that exact same size at Home Depot I may check out the quality of their tubs. Who is the manufacturer of those tubs from Home Depot??

Thanks

I purchased the one from lowes and like it better than the one I origannly got for Home depot. THe one from Home Depot has rounded sides which means a loss of space for animals. I found the larger ones at lowes. I think they will work better with the square sides. I am planning on making another rack this will be for growing some larger rats and maybe a super quanity breeding group. I think they both average 3 foot by to foot and are 8 inches deep. You are loosing some depth with the round end ones, but to each his own. Todd

the larger ones from Loews have ridges on the bottom that I think wil disqualify them from being used with rats as they can chew on them and skedadle.

The ones from Home depot are approx same size as the ones from Loews but made of Much heavier gauge plastic so i think there would be less chance of "sagging".

The larger one from Loews has ridges on the bottom and that is a "no-no' where rodents are concerned. that is why i am worried about the hanging hole on one end of the ones from HD. I worry the rats can get to it and chew their way out.

If anyone has any experience with the ones from HD, please let me know.

I went to Home Depot today and bought some of those tubs...man they are so much better quality than those cheap ones from Lowes, plus they were half the price. They were almost identical in size, about 3-4 times thicker plastic and are completely smooth. I noticed the nail hole in the end, but the way I have my rack set up the rats can't get to it so it works perfectly.

Thanks for the info on those HD tubs, I took those other ones back to Lowes. I plan on building plenty more racks with those HD tubs, they are perfect!!

Thanks again
