Ackies rule!

ALT Jan 25, 2011 07:55 PM

I got my original group in September 2005, from Rare Earth. Here they are on the first day, moments after unpacking.

Naturally, I was smitten. They were such charming little monsters, and I learned a lot through trial and error rising them up.

Sure are nice looking when you wash the dirt off them. Their size and coloration lead me to believe the line is of Western Australian origin. They’re too large for NTs, and look nothing like the small, darker, contrasty QLD acanthurus. Anyway, they turned out to be 2.2, and in the spring of 2007 they began to breed.

That tiny little dude got the job done eventually. He bred both females, and the girls laid a day apart. The entire enclosure had a deep soil/sand substrate, but I also sunk a nesting box filled with the same sand/soil mix, because I was paranoid about humidity content and thought the box would be easier to maintain. First female to lay dug her own tunnel, and laid 3 viable eggs. Second female used the box.

First female found the eggs before I did, and the above site greeted me when I checked on them. She laid 6 eggs total. Four were destroyed, the other two made it.

About 100 days later, my very first babies entered the world!

The next couple times they bred, I was not lucky enough to observe copulations. Still, it wasn’t difficult to tell when they were expecting. They all grew a lot since the first breeding too.

More babies, because babies are awesome.

A hold-back 2009 pair.

Subadult 09 kid that got into a fight with a cagemate. He was out chasing down roaches like that one day, as if nothing was wrong. I never did pin-point the injury that caused that mess. Oh well, he didn’t seem to care.

Wrapping up with my favorite monster male. Sadly, he doesn’t seem to have the greatest fertility. His partner has only ever produced infertile clutches with him, but she has no problem with the other male. Shame, because he has the best personality.

Crappy webcam shot of him helping me get some computer work done.

And for fun, some habitat and ackies south of Boulia, QLD.

Hope you enjoyed!

Well, this is kinda wonderful. I sold the ackies to Joe at Rare Earth, and they or their offspring ended up in a good home. Very cool.

Did you go to australia? I have been there many times and seen many kinds of ackies. Good on ya.

You have good taste in animals IMO.... At least, you like similar things that I do.

Would that mertens be south of Halls Creek? looks like the same area.

I miss it too, its been a few years since I was there, I went ALOT. hahahahahahahaha

From your pics, you spend time in southern/central queensland? Or have I lost my mind. I saw those bright colored spencers in that area, and at the time it was not in the books. hahahahaha

Which happens often in OZ.

I was going to post a pic of something australian, but instead I will offer something neat from here. Thanks for showing us such wonderfull photos.

Last April/May I did two big laps around the eastern half of Australia- one from Brisbane to Cairns along the coast, then back down to Melbourne by way of Mt. Isa and Winton. That part was vacation and indescribably amazing.

From Melb, I hopped a plane to Adelaide to meet up with the work crew and drove back to Isa through Coober Pedy, Alice, Tennant Creek, Camooweal etc. Nearest "towns" to where I've spent significant time were Boulia, Longreach, and Eromanga. The Merten's, Spencer's and Ackies were from a station near Boulia. Got the panoptes and tristis near Longreach, and the gouldii was pulled off the road somewhere between Longreach and Eromanga.

Part of the purpose of the trip was to survey central-western QLD (Channel Country)to help update "the books"...eventually.

Nice aeneus FR and beautiful ackies jburokas!
