Super Pastel????

Paige69 Jan 25, 2011 10:30 PM

Hi,
I got her as a super pastel but a friend of mine thinks she might be a pastel. I think with all the blushing she is a super. Pls tell me what you all think? Pls keep on mind she shed but her head didn't so it is still covered in pre-shedskin. I keep putting her in the sink with water and increasing the moisture in her tub but it is still stuck on their 3 days later. Thx, Paige

Sorry, I was trying to figure out how to post a pic from my phone and accidentally hit send instead of trying to find the picture.

I also didn't get to proofread it before sending and my phone always corrects me and some of the corrections are wrong. I can't post it from my computer either. Any help would be appreciated.

Also I keep soaking her but haven't been able to get the shed off of her head?

It keeps locking up on an old picture of me and kids and I can't change it. I can't delete the pic at all Can I text it to someone or mail it to someones email?

first you need to get the shed of it's head! that could kill you'r snake! then post you'r pix in the photo's section and you'r photo's will show up in the link at the bottom of you'r forum post.

Can you tell me how to get it off? I have soaked her but she doesn't like her head under water. I have also tried pouring it on her head and misting her cage. Thx, Paige

take some scotch tape for small areas or 2inch packing tape for large areas. wrap the tape around 2 or 3 fingers with the sticky side out. then roll the tape from the head towards the tail to lift off the old skin......same idea as to removing lint from clothing.

just be gentle when rolling.

I use vaseline to help with stuck sheds. Just dab a tiny amount on with your fingertip and rub it on the stuck parts. Then give it an hour or two to work and it will soften the skin and make it much easier to pull off. Works great on snakes and gecko toes as well. I have never had it cause any problems with my animals.

This is the advice being given to people nowadays? That a little bit of stuck shed can kill a snake? Sorry but a little bit of stuck shed will not kill your snake.

A little bit of stuck shed will not kill your snake. Where did you hear that? It is truly a minor issue. Soak the critter for a couple of hours or use the other tricks recommended by the other posters. At this time of year it is very common as humidity naturally drops in the wintertime. Many folks are dealing with stuck sheds now and unless their husbandry is really crappy, the snakes will be absolutely fine. It takes a perfect storm of incompetance to kill a snake with a stuck shed.

She is approx 150 grams. Her head is in shed but now that I have your alls advice I am going to go get some vaseline tonight soften it up and after an hour or two will take it off with scotch tape. Thanks for all the great info. You all make me smile!!

I'm with JYohe on this one. I think it's a normal pastel... partially because she looks very close to my male pastel. But like he said, photos can change colors. She's pretty though

a better/safer way to try and get the shed off is put her in warm but not hot water for about 20-30min thn try and take it off...just a suggestion...

Thanks I have soaked her the last 3 nights for about 5 mins each night and have dribbled water on her head but she hates it. I put approx 2 -3 inches of water in the sink treated with dechlorinater. I will try closer to 20 mins tonight. Thx.

I find it's easier to soak balls in the tub than in the sink, even at that size. They can submerge easier. My balls really seem to enjoy a good long soak in the tub. I fill it just to a point where the water barely covers their back. They can easily breathe as needed, but often will put their heads down and fully submerge. Sounds like that is what yours needs. I'd let her soak until either the water cools off or she starts actively trying to get out of the tub, whichever comes first. After a good soak you should easily be able to find a loose corner and peel the shed off. You can also soak a towel in warm water and let her crawl around through it after her soaking if you aren't comfortable peeling the shed off yourself. You've tried soaking then putting her back in her enclosure and it hasn't worked, so sounds like you'll have to take a more active role in the removal at this point.

Oh wow, I just read back what I wrote. Only here can you write those first 3 sentences and have them sound "normal", especially coming from a girl!

Isn't that the truth!! I read it after you put that second paragraph and it made me roll!! Do you find it necessary to put dechlorinater in the water? Or is that a little overkill? Have you had a chance to look at my pics of my "super"? Thx for the info, Paige

I have a really nice large soup pot with a glass lid I soak my snakes in (same pot I make my famous jambalaya in, sans snake). I set the pot with about 2 inches of water in it on a heating pad set on low so the water stays tepid to warm. Add snake and make "snake soup" as my husband calls it. Keeping the water warm seems to be key in encouraging the snake to lay low in the water for maximum coverage. I leave a snake in the pot for 20 to 40 minutes.

I stress the need to make sure any heat pad you use doesn't get too warm though otherwise you would, of course, end up with real BP soup. The kind made for laying directly on flesh such a shoulder warmers are ideal because they have multiple fail-safes so people won't get burned if they fall asleep with them on.

Tepid is the key temp word....check water temp with your elbow and it should feel neither cold nor hot, just tepid! It translates to about 78-80 degrees. I use a rubbermaid-type sweater box kept in my 82 degree snake room. Put in about 2-4 inches of water and soak the snake for several hours, even up to 8 hours at times. The shed will just slide right off. Weight the top with books or rocks to ensure no escapees!

JYohe Jan 26, 2011 04:59 PM

from the pics it looks normal pastel,,,but cameras have a way of screwing up the real colors of snakes..especially stuff like pastels and supers and all....

as for skin...grab it and pull it off...if easy....if not...it will come off sooner or later.....

(damp pillow case /snake bag for 1/2 hour...tie snake inside...make sure it cannot escape....it will rub off skin...)...

...I really don't usually worry about stuck pieces of skin on snakes..............

Thank you all for the input! I am a little bummed that she is most likely a regular pastel. I thought, only the super pastel had all the side and top blushing/lightness in the color. Is it the lighter head that gives away a super vs normal pastel?

I could have bought at least 4 pastels for what I got her from. Darn it!! Last thing I want to do is deal with a lemon because my "female" I got last time was male and that is how I ended up with my "super" pastel girl.

JYohe - do you put something that they can get out of the water in or just the tub for 3+ hours? How often do you do it? Monthly? Do you dechlorinate that water or are snakes fine with tap water?

V/R Paige
