Climbing wall for king - ideas?

Arkanis Jan 27, 2011 03:50 PM

My mountan king outgrew her 10 gallon and today i bought a 20 gallon for her... Here is a pic of the climbing wall i made for her with my friend Tom who made some for museums and stores in the past... made of dental plaster over mesh, newspapers, and pvc pipe (tunnel).. The snake seemed to like and spent much time in the tunnel inside of the climbing wall...

This type of snake likes climbing in granite so i want to make climbing wall for the 20 look more granite like and have ledges and cracks, and a tunnel also.

Any ideas?

I like it! How easy is it to clena? Can you clean the tunnels easily?

It is very easy to clean... also it is attached with velcro to the back of the tank so i can just remove it and blast the tunnel with a hose, soap and brush if she craps in there

This is similar to a project I'm working on for my plated lizards.

I'm using different thicknesses of sheet foam like at your local home supply center. It comes in thicknesses from 1/2" up to 2". It's real easy to work and sculpt with a wood rasp and/or a surform plane/file.

I'm coating it with slurries of mason's mortar with different colors of mortar color, but colored tile grout would work also. It would be easy to embed real chunks of rock/gravel too.

If you want an easy to clean surface you can spray it with flat polyurethane. This would make it washable but still give the dull rock finish.

with your local countertop/kitchen companies in your area that do stone countertops. They may have some pieces of granite countertop left over they would be happy to give you that would work. It should be thin enough to attach to the back of a cage. Just use the non-polished, more natural looking sides, and you can probably even take a sheet and break to design.
