Not your normal Escape...

EmberBall Jan 29, 2011 01:34 PM

So, I have my 09 Ember probable Het Hypo female in a nice adult Vision rack. I really like the Vision racks, and have never had any issues with them.....

So I put my male Ember Het Hypo in with the female Ember probable Het Hypo, and did not think much about it. A few minutes later, there was some thrashing around in the tub, it was her first introduction ever, and the first time she had seen another snake in a couple of years, and the little scuffle is something I am used to hearing every once in awhile when introducing a male and female. It died down after a few minutes, and I did not think anything about it until today. I saw that something was not quite right in the snake room, a box was not sitting the way it usually is...so I began to look around. I found the male Ember sitting in the Vision rack tub, that was wide open(8" gap)! So, the only thing I can think of is, the snakes must have started up their scuffle again, and in the process, opened the tub. There was spilled water, I am not sure if this could have helped them open the tub or hurt their chances. I was surprised to see the male still in the wide open tub, but the female was nowhere to be seen. An hour later, I found her safe and sound. So, those of you with Vision racks, have you ever had this happen, or have you had snakes open tubs with other racks? I am 100% sure I did not leave the tub open! The snake that escaped was the snake in the middle of this pic.

Hi Dave,
I haven't had any escape, but read plenty of stories of it happening with Vision Racks. I use Vision racks and had "locked" them up from the start to prevent escapes. Very simple to do- there are holes around the perimeter of each shelf. I just insert a bolt that is smaller than the hole with a nut that is bigger than the hole threaded onto it and the tub can no longer be moved out by the animals. Here's some photos. Glad your pair is OK!

Oh ya, please excuse the dust! We live in the desert in a very windy area, so we fight dust all year

I've been trying to figure out a good way to secure the tubs in my vision racks, never thought of that. Thanks for posting the pics!

This happened to me yesterday!

Went in the snake room yesterday morning and noticed THREE tubs were pushed out. I think that one of the bigger girls got out first and decided to explore the vision rack... While doing so she must have opened others.

I've also had a larger girl open up her tub that was in a homemade rack. She was just hanging out on the edge when I walked in... I noticed her pushing on it a few days before (actually arching her body to the top and pushing). Guess she figured it out.

The big ones are easy to find lol. The little ones... not so easy.

***I purchased my vision used. The seller had lost one of his snakes that he had been housing in it.

We did basically the same thing that Ralph Davis did with his racks and we added conduit pipe "locks" to each row of tubs. The conduit runs from the top to the bottom threw C-clamps screwed onto the top and bottom rack shelves.

No more loose snakes!

This works too...never had an escape from a Vision.
