Breeding Size Question, kinda long

TimS Jan 31, 2011 12:57 AM

Hey everyone, I was wondering if ANYONE out there could share age and size of female and male boas when they breed them, and whats the smallest they ave ever bred.

I am not asking this so I can pop out babies as fast as possible, but very curious, only numbers i ave ever really solidly heard together were 6' 10lbs and over 3 years old for a female.

The ONE boa I ever bred was right at the 12lb. mark but was a older girl and quite muscular, and she gave me a wonderful litter of 23 babies 0slugs 0still borns.

HOWEVER recently there is a well known and respected breeder whom has a female breeding that is said to be his smallest female to ovulate.
""She might be 5 feet long, but she is almost three years old now. Kinda of a skinny little girl""
I asked weight and he replied ""she is under 10lbs""

I have searched and searched the net looking for the answer to my question but I get mixed results,
its more about age then size, its more about size then age and so on in a circle, or i will find 3 years old and over 6' then for males all i have found is 18 months or over 3'

I am just curious to know what everyone here feels safe breeding at what age and size for males and females, Granted I do know all snakes grow at diff rates and a fatty power fed snake is never a good thing in any scenario breeder or pet.

I hope to hear lots of opinions, and pics are always welcome to help show size reference.

Small, skinny females, or even large skinny females are more likely to suffer health problems from being bred. I think dwarf Centrals are often breedable earlier than the larger locales, and of course, some of those are lucky to ever get over 5 feet or 12 pounds! Often males breed at less than 2 years old, or try to, but don't get the job done. I usually wait until males are 2 years and females 3 years. Rarely do females have the secondary sex characteristics (thick tail, heavy body) indicating they are ready to breed before 30 months of age. Even then, three year olds often have a high number of slugs and small litters...this may partly be due to also using younger inexperienced males, and moving males onto multiple females. Good health and good body weight is more important than age or size in my opinion.
