Sandfish skinks

canadianwings Sep 27, 2003 07:06 PM

Hello all,
Sandfish skinks,... Once again I've been reunited with seeing these spectacular creatures, and had a little guy sitting in my hand after being rudly interupted from his sleep in the sand.

I haven't discovered much info on them, so I've come to this forum who I hope would no there fair share.

- What are sandfish skinks scientific(latin) name?
- Does anyone own sandfish skinks, what do you think about them?
- What should there habitats be setup like?
- What temp should tank be, what size should tank be?
- What watt heatlamp bulb would I use?
- How many inches of sand?
- Are there just plain insectivores? DO they eat anything else?
- Other helpful information would be SO greatly apprecaited.

If you don't mind I would love to ask more questions.

Steven

Hello, well I'm researching more and more about these little guys....

I asked a petstore, the only petstore that has them available... $44.44!!!!!!!!!(Canadian)

Do skinks bite, not that it matters just wondering?

Do have any info on garden skinks? A possibility of skink I may look into.

IS there such thing as firebellied skink? A petstore told me they had them, I assume there talking about newts.

Hi, Steven:
Well, I can't comment on whether CAN$44.44 is a good price or not. Around here, they'd probably go for around US$50, in my opinion.
ATTENTION -- the following is NOT a smartaleck statement: All animals with a mouth are capable of biting. Skinks have mouths; therefore, they can bite. The key thing to know is the animal's aggressive disposition. Some skinks are much more tame than others. I have never owned a sandfish so I cannot speak from experience, but I have heard they are not biters but are fast runners/sliders.
I'm not sure what species you're referring to when it comes to garden skinks. A Latin name is always most helpful.
A firebellied skink is what is more commonly called a fire skink (see picture near the top of the skink forum by the red word SKINKS) and they are pretty popular. (You're right that there is such thing as a fire-bellied newt.)
I hope all this helps.
