Global Warming just hit South Texas.......LOL
This usually happens about once every 125 years but it snowed here in 2004 on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day....Got flurries last year and now this:

Tonight: Cloudy, with a low around 26. North wind between 14 and 23 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph.

Thursday: A chance of snow, freezing rain, and sleet, mainly after noon. Cloudy, with a high near 32. North wind between 17 and 23 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Little or no snow accumulation expected.

Thursday Night: Freezing rain and sleet likely before midnight, then a chance of snow and sleet. Cloudy, with a low around 27. North northwest wind between 17 and 21 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New ice accumulation of 0.2 to 0.4 of an inch possible. New snow and sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Friday: A 50 percent chance of snow before noon. Cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing, with a high near 38. North northwest wind between 14 and 20 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.

Friday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 30. North northwest wind 8 to 14 mph becoming west southwest

We got down to -3 last night without windchill; windchill factor hit us to -20 or so.

*&*( This! It's supposed to get below 0 again tonight (like 6 below I think).

John,

My friend, you have just recited every forcast, for every week that I've experienced here in good 'ole Buffalo, since Dec 1st.

However, I choose to live in this madness. I can see how these weather conditions could stress you southern boys out. We had a day off of school today (6th grade teacher, snow day) with just the simple threat of the tail end of that storm that you folks have been fighting with for the last couple of days...and we are used to this stuff. It must have really been a monster. Stay warm.

daveb Feb 02, 2011 07:52 PM

hey will,

they closed school here in the 'cuse area as well. we were tabbed to get 18", i think we were lucky if we got 18 micrometers. no direspect to anyone out there, but it is amazing how this type of storm screws up so much of the country, but when you live in it year in and out, 18" of snow in a storm ... i just kind of shrug my shoulders and keep movin'...
i did choose this over hurricanes and tornadoes, lol. i don't want too many of those.

hope everyone and their collection are doing OK with the weather

Hi Dave,

We had the exact same forecast...and result. All of our local school districts (including mine) called off the night before in expectation of a massive storm, but all we received was a dusting. Man, those superintendants must have been pi$$ed off...LOL! Stay warm buddy.

There was a Global Warming summit in Mexico late last year, and the temperature that weekend was an all-time recorded low for that region. Not great advertising for that cause, I tell you. Great for a chuckle though.

As poor human slobs, we just have to make the best of the cold winter. I've had to move my brumation tanks in the basement closer the the heater to avoid freezing my thayeri collection.

The term global warming really does lead to confusion.

The fact is that the observed average annual temperature of Earth's atmosphere and oceans continues to increase, hence global warming is occurring. However it does not necessarily follow that the planet is warming evenly. The jet stream, which steers our weather in the U.S., typically moves generally from west to east. But due to unusually warm winter temperatures at high latitudes (e.g., 25 F instead of -25 F), the jet stream has been developing large meanders, which in turn allow masses of polar air to sag down way farther than usual (they usually stay farther north, "hemmed in" by the jet stream). The result is record colder winter temperatures in much of the lower 48, esp. the south and southeast. The same effect has made this winter colder than usual throughout much of Europe. Thus, in a seeming paradox, global WARMING leads to local changes in weather that can be COLDER than usual. A better term for the whole phenomenon is global climate change, because that is what we see happening. Global warming, as described above, is just part of it.

KcTrader Feb 03, 2011 09:05 AM

Nice post, Tgcorley. I think it should have been "Extreme Weather" Basically it all boils down to the age old question of " Is the glass half full or half empty?" or "What came first the snake or the egg?"

Science is just fun, listening to both sides battle it out while goverments make new laws, and businesses make money. It's just a cycle and it will shift again, maybe not in my lifetime but it will.

Hope everyone is staying warm, and this summer I will be saying hope no one has any heat strokes.

LOL I woke up this morning to -3 and today's hi is supposed to hit a whopping 15 then back down to 0 or below tonight.

Got up to this yesterday morning and I don't live in Syracuse or Buffalo. LOL I'm in central Illinois.

Out my front door and front yard. The wife and I spent most of Tuesday afternoon and off and on all night shoveling to try to stay ahead of the snow. 2"/hour on average. Where was my neighbor with his tractor while we were shoveling? LOL

Ooh ooh ooh looking out my back door.

Had to keep areas clear for the dogs.

Barbecue anyone? LOL

Something to keep on topic. It's not a king but a recent acquisition.

Well not quite normal, blizzards like this only happen every 7-8 years. It's true we do get some cold snaps every winter.

I thought to myself....."Why do folks live here?".....hahahaha

I ask myself this everyday and it has nothing to do with the weather. LOL

Yep sounds pretty cold for you south Texans. Last time I was in the area was '79 when my band played at the Hilton on South Padre Island. That was right after a hurricane had gone through. But at least it was warm. LOL

I've also spent some time in Laredo during the heat of the summer. I no longer have to imagine what hell might be like. LOL

Stay warm JL.

I used to think that way John, but I will take a "good ol' summa day heya in Luziana" over the cold anytime. Must be age creeping in. At least I feel I can unfold my limbs long enough to get something accomplished in the heat!!!

Are your snakes going to Florida with you?
I lived in Southwest Michigan for a decade, but it was too long of winters and the summers were plagued by every biting insect native to the Northern Hemisphere.
