Cal king not eating/brumation.

OZZZ Feb 04, 2011 03:49 PM

Ive got a yearling cal king and she hasnt eaten for about 3 weeks maybe a bit longer. Shes still active, and I have had the heat pad on the entire time. Im assuming its because of the winter and shes wanting to brumate.

Im wondering if I could simply unplug the heat pad and flourecent lighting to the cage shes in to brumate her rather then put her in a rubbermaid. I dont really have anywhere like a garage that I can get her temps into the 50's .... more like put the cage on the floor with no heat or lights getting it into the low 60's.

Either that or I can just leave the heat pad on and let her ride it out?? Alternatively, I could add an incandecent bulb to up the ambient temps ... that might stimulate her to feed??

Any suggestions?

Well, I would opt to simply unplug things, let the snake cool for a while, and resume in a few more weeks. It won't be very long anyway, and it will surely let the snake cycle some and come out with a good feeding response.

Just my 2 cents on it..

Thanks for the input, thats kinda what I was planning. Im tired of unthawing rodents only to have her turn her nose up at them and have to refreeze or toss them.

OZZZ....
You may want to check your set up / husbandry.
I've never had a calking that didn't want to eat unless it was a male during breeding season..........A Temperature gradient as well as a humidity gradient usually will keep a calking feeding throughout every winter........

Poor planning and procrastination on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part...

Heh Heh...you need a bull snake to eat what the king turns her nose up at. My adult male pyro didn't want his hopper so I gave it to my male bull even though the bull is in blue; he took it from my fingers and swallowed it promptly.

Everyone needs a 'garbage can snake'.Mine is a boa constictor that will eat any leftovers including the smelly ones and every once in a while my hand.
