I found this thing in my yard!

a153fish Feb 05, 2011 05:43 AM

I've seen pictures of these in books but never found one in person. I will look them up online to see what they eat, but I will most likely let the thing go today. I wanted to take some pics first.

Those are pretty cool, I found a couple in Hillsborough county,FL a year or two ago and kept it for a few months. Mine ate earth worms, I was never able to actually see them eat but when I cleaned out the tank a few months later all the earthworms were gone. Just my observations, Cool find though!

Hey T, that's exactly what my wife said, lol. I also thought it was a worm but it was too pink. It was under a rock I use for decorations around some plants.

That's a pretty cool find bro. Hope it does well for you. Although from reading about them it's not exactly the most exciting herp. LOL

There's never anything cool like that under the rocks in my garden. Earthworms, pillbugs and earwigs. LMAO

Hey Jimmy is it possible the worms could have crawled out? I had them do that with some ringneck snakes. I thought they were eating them but, then I found a couple moving along on the floor?
I would like to try and keep it alive, but I hate to have it die on me. I think I read they are parthenogenic.

Possible, but I never saw any dried up around the house yet. But anything is possible. I didn't notice any weight loss in the couple of months that I kept them. I filled a 10 gallon tank halfway with a peat, sand and moss mixture with oak leaves on top. It was a cool tank I was keeping some green tree frogs in it for a while. It had a top on it for a while. I never saw him even at night never came to the surface that I ever observed but he did make incredibly tunnels though.

Maybe the frogs ate the worms??? But they were the big Canadian Night Crawlers almost the size of the tree frogs.

Yes, both the Brahminy Blind snake and the Worm Lizard are parthenogenic. Man, nature sure can be bizarre!...

Very cool Jorge!,.....

That is a Florida Worm Lizard(Rhineura floridana). They feed on earthworms, spiders, and other small insects.

I found a Brahminy Blind snake(Ramphotyphlops braminus) in my yard many years ago. I was blown away when I saw a tiny tongue flicking out, and two microscopic eyes that looked like tiny specks of pepper..LOL!

Bluerosy Feb 07, 2011 05:35 PM

Doug,
Those blind snakes are EVERYWHERE in Hawaii. I used to live there and found them under almost anything I turned. Even in my apt complex under potted plants.

They probably came over in potted plants. Like most introduced species in HI. Almost everything there is a recent intro. Captn Cook brought the rats and cockroaches over on his boat. Then came the Cane toads to take care of the cockroaches and the moongoose was introduced to take catre of the rats. Of course nothing worked. So these critters are in abundance.

Also it is funny how the locale Hawaian gov't and tourist industry brags on how there are no snakes in HI. LOL!...

yeah those just rain worms on your lanai Mr.and Mrs. Brady.

They are EVERYWHERE here as well.....In the Spring and Summer we can even find them in our house. Locals call them Carpet snakes for that reason.........

For sure Rainer!. It's a true paradise for them in Hawaii too.

Yeah, the notion of their being absolutely "no" snakes there is humorous to say the least..LOL!

I guess my chances of finding one of those in my yard are pretty remote! LOL! It is just about the ugliest little snake I've ever seen. It looks prehistoric, like the prototype for future snakes.
