cats and ball pythons

XxBuzkilxX Feb 05, 2011 06:46 PM

Does anyone have a cat and a ball python? Is this safe? I want to get a cat and was wondering what everyone's thoughts would be.

I would guess this would be bad.

I have a couple cats, they're fine with the ball pythons. Of course, don't put them together. But overall, the cats will stare if the snakes are moving around the bins a lot, but my balls don't seem to care, they eat, poop, and breed normally despite cats in the room.

As long as the snake isn't out of the bin around the cat (which would be a silly thing to do anyway...) nothing bad should happen.

Hi,
Yes, I would have to agree to just be careful. My cat is fascinated by my snakes but one time one got a little to close and she swatted it but I think it was just a warning because she didn't use her claws. She likes to think she runs the house. LOL!!
I really have a bunch of different animals but my snakes are handled totally different from all of them because of their nature(secretive and shy) and I would fear for my snakes safety while the others co-habituate nicely.

It all depends on the cat. We have a torti who has been sweet with all our animals. Not a single "killer" bone in her body. She could care less about the BPs most of the time and handle them freely when she is around.

We had a tabby recently, however, who reacted VERY strongly to the snake. We had one of our Normal ball pythons out on the couch and were watching her carefully to see if she would be like our Torti. There must be something instinctive in some cat's brains that can recognize certain dangers. As soon as she saw the snake all her fur went on end, she hissed, and disappeared like a shot. Obviously, that was the end of that and we never had them in the same room together. For at least a week after even the cat would approach the couch very cautiously and sniff everything before laying down. She was super paranoid.

So, it depends on the cat, depends on the snake, depends on your vigilance, etc. As always, use your best judgment

Ok so sounds like the cats don't mind too greatly and the ball python doesn't either. Will be careful. Thanks for the replies.
