New snake - huge lump on tail/anus

pyxigirl Feb 07, 2011 12:10 AM

Hi, my husband brought home a new snake and it appears completely healthy and friendly, the people he got it from said he/she eats well, and when he brought her home she had a normal healthy bowel movement and everything seems fine EXCEPT I was horrified to see she has a huge lump on her tail around her anus - my hubby said the people had her for about 1-2 years and she has always had this lump and they have never brought her to the vet. I gently felt the lump and it feels fluid-filled. Any idea What could this be? I realize she will have to go to the vet

Most likely it's a scent gland infection. They happen somewhat frequently with Hognose Snakes, but other types of snakes can get them too. It is treatable if you take the snake to a vet. The fluid needs to be drained and the gland filled with antibiotics. Usually the infection doesn't seem to have any impact on thesnake, but I'd get the reptile checked out by someone who treats snakes.
