Sibling No. Pines size difference

Bigtattoo Feb 08, 2011 12:18 PM

I tried to get some quick pics of a couple of my Northerns to show the size difference between sibslings.

Both of these are clutchmates born in August of last year.

The bigger one is one of my females and is every bit of 3'. My garbage can, she never refuses a meal and eats her fill every week even when deep in blue.

The little one is one of my males and pushing 20". He's always been a fussy eater and maybe will eat one pinky rat/week, well most weeks anyway.

All 5 of my Northerns have sweet dispositions with not a nip, hiss or tail rattle from the bunch.

Thanks for looking.

I love those northerns!! Beautiful!

Yep, sometimes you can have size differences like that with siblings.

Normally, my northerns were around 5 feet by the third year, but I have a retained sperm clutch female that hatched very late in the season, but was 5 foot by year 2, with only once a week feedings. Go figure.

Thanks for the compliment, I love them too. They just get better with each shed.

I have 2 other females just slightly smaller than the one pictured. They are pretty good eaters but nothing like her, she's just a bottomless pit. (no pun intended)

I believe the 2 males have the potential to get pretty big if they would just eat better. I'm hoping with the arrival of spring all of their appetites will pick up.

Thanks again,

Also, like you mentioned, about yours having sweet dispositions, same here. All of my northerns, actually, all of my pits, have sweet dispositions as well. Never a hiss. My northerns especially.

Please keep us posted with pics of these fine specimens!

Well I can't say that about all of my pits. LOL My red bulls and male black pine still can get a little hissy and even nip now and again. But they are coming around and are way better than when I first got them.

My deppeis are always pretty calm but still shy. The linis are extremely shy and one of them is a real pistol. I love how they will rattle their tails even with a mouthful of food while in their feed tubs. Funny little guys.

Love the behavior details/differences. One of my northerns will rattle constantly while eating sometimes. She is extremely calm and docile so I'm guessing it's more out of excitment.

Beautiful northerns. I have a 2010 male who was being a fussy eater as well. I just put him to sleep hoping he'll wake up hungry.

Bigtattoo Feb 10, 2011 10:16 AM

I considered putting my males into brumation but I wanted to see if I couldn't get some size on them. They have grown but not as much as I would like.

Man those are some exceptional northerns! WOW!

My '09 Burlingtion Co. siblings both eat very well but the male is just lagging in size and girth by about 30 percent. Of course there's a bit of a positive feedback situation there too in that by being larger she gets larger meals. But that wasn't the case early on. She's 1050 grams and he's 775 grams.
