AQUIRING A TOAD

atldragons Feb 08, 2011 08:08 PM

I would like to know where i the best place to aquire a Toad for use of scenting pinkies for my picky eater Albino Hognose. He was told to be feeding on Frozen and live... and aggressive feeder.... But he just doesnt seem to want anything. He nudges the pinkie a little bit, like he is interested, but then moves it out of his way. I have used tongs to move it and "mimick" that it is live... I have even tried LIVE.... No luck. He has NOT EATEN IN 9 days. Hasnt got much smaller at all... But I am concerned.

9 days is really nothing to worry about , just monitor his weight and wait him out . had a male go over a month with out feeding and decided to start by himself suddenly.

One of my smaller tri-color hogs, does this she is very shy eater I would try making sure your hog is at a temp. of 75-80 ,then try canned salmon make sure you take the bones out I feed mine live fuzzies, mice , and canned salmon this always has worked for me. ( GOOD LUCK ) (OR YOU CAN TRY LIZARDS FOR SCENTING )

If your snake was taking unscented pinks I would not try to scent... That would be a very last resort...

How about you give us a rundown of your set up... Temps, size of cage, bedding, stuff like that...

Most of the time when hogs stop feeding, it is usually husbandry related and not how their food item smells...

I agree 9 days is nothing to worry about. Thats basically just skipping a meal. My males skip a meal every know and then. I have had several go off food for over a month. Especially during the winter. like everyone already said, watch the body weight.

TUNE JUICE WAS THE KEY....

I havent been on the forums in some days...

I have him in an equivalent of 10 gallons, in a rubbermaid tub.... custom screen top. 87 degrees on hot side... 65 humdidity....

He wouldnt eat ANYTHING for 9 days... Until I dumped Tuna Juice all over a live pinkie and gave it to him... he at it like NO ONE'S BUSINESS!

I've been dealing with the same issue. Only difference, I received my alb female (who's an '09 and WELL started) last September, and she only ate for me 2 or 3 times within the first month or two...then stopped all together. She had been taking FT all along. I tried everything I could think of but she showed no interest. So I began cooling her mid Nov, and recently warmed her up a few weeks ago. Well, after trying some FT and live, with negative results, I was out in my yard about 2 days ago and found a tree frog. Well guess what...She devoured it within just a few minutes. At least I think I found what she likes. Now I just gotta get her switched back over to mice.

I wonder if the move from the east coast to the west coast may have something to do with her change in appetite.

Good luck with yours!

my hog was acting very similar to yours.(showing interest in the pinkie, then ignored it) maybe the pinks are a little to big for its liking. at first, mine refused to eat for weeks, then i was able to find much smaller pinks and he didnt hesitate to devour it when i offered him one. he hasn't skipped a meal since

You will now need to treat your animal for parasites. In the future, freeze the frog/toad for 36 to 48 hours before feeding. Frogs/toads carry flukes (among other parasites) that are a pain to treat. Introducing wc pray into your captive environment can carry risk some keepers do not consider.

Tips for picky feeders

-smaller food item
-brained food item
-tuna water for scenting
-remove water for a day or two, and offer a wet food item (they will often drink off of the food and then eat it)
-Time. If the animal is holding its weight, then give it time. Western Hognose have a reputation for going off of food periodically.
