ReptiCON

Just went to the NJ show last night....wow talk about underwhelming. I guess I was expecting just a bit more then 4 dealers and only one with a decent table of animals. I won't name the store that was there, they did have a decent selection but if your promoting something like repticon I expected something like the white plains show

that's how the show's were here in northern california last year.

probably why we only have one show this year - and in september.

a153fish Feb 12, 2011 03:21 PM

It's not the best time of the year either.

Yeah but they way it's advertised you would think it would be half way decent. It wasn't worth the gas I used to get there, for get the admission.

Does anyone know anything about the Houston Repticon next weekend? We were planning to drive there from Austin, but if the show is going to be as big a disappointment as the other shows mentioned, we may change our minds.

After reading the other posts in this thread, I think we'll go ahead and make the drive to Houston and try it out. I've been looking forward to attending a Repticon show.
Thanks, everyone.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I went a few years back thinking it's going to be like White Plains and there was only a couple of tables with a few reptiles. It was so disappointing. It's too bad because the place is huge and it could really hold a nice size reptile show there. I don't know if it's worth it considering you have Hamburg, White Plains and the Long Island show competing.

I can understand how you feel, but I'd like to make two comments.

When Repticon started here in Florida, they were tiny. I was definitely frustrated as a vendor, traveling, hotel cost etc. They have an excellent business blueprint, radio ads, signs all over the specific city of the show for a week prior. They have definitely won me over, and have done such a great job across the southeast, that they have driven out and purchased almost all the competing shows (most which had preceeded them). They will do well in a short while in the newer markets.

Second comment. I grew up in New Jersey. Fish and Game does not want or make it easy for vendors to travel in display, or for anyone there to enjoy owning or observing reptiles for that matter. Theirs a reason for the past twenty years their has been virtualy zero shows in Jersey. It is not because NJ has a low population or lack of money. Jersey residents have always had to travel to PA, NY, and MD for shows.

That's why this site is so cool! There's usually someone here with an insiders viewpoint that can shed some light on situations! I agree that Repticon does a good job of advertising and getting the word out. Even the OP mentioned that there was a lot of build up for that show.

Doesn't the table cost something like $700.....

DMong Feb 13, 2011 10:40 PM

NOOOO!!, even the tables at Daytona I think are like $300-$350 each.

The Repticon tables in Orlando last time I vended there were like $95 bucks each I think.

The Repticon Showcase at the Super Pet Expo in New Jersey, like the showcases upcoming in King of Prussia and Chantilly, have never been advertised as a Repticon expo. Quite the opposite, we went to great lengths on our website to describe what the showcase would be, a "mini" version of a Repticon show showcasing the types of things that might be found at a typical expo. The goal of these showcases is to introduce the concept of a reptile expo to the 10,000 pet owners who attend each Super Pet Expo. We've been allocated a limited amount of space at each Super Pet Expo, and in this space we have attempted to represent all of the product types available at a typical expo: dry goods, support products, feeders, and of course a selection of animals for purchase as well.

We posted complete information about what would be available at the showcase on our website, including an accurate vendor list, so that more seasoned show attendees could make an informed decision as whether visiting the Super Pet Expo and the Repticon Showcase was right for them. If anyone visited the Super Pet Expo without looking at our website or the Super Pet Expo website to get information about the event that they were attending, we certainly regret that they were disappointed.

My wife and I drove in from Austin for the Houston show today. I'm glad we decided to go after all. It was about the same size as the shows we've been attending in Austin, but with a few fun additions. The hands-on shows that Thomas and Clint did were very fun. We missed the other shows (turtles, lizards, arachnids), but I'm sure they were great, too. This seemed to be a really kid-friendly show. Good job. I hope it grows and is very successful.
