Am I, or Am I Not!!!!

Shalomjeru Feb 15, 2011 03:24 PM

I need help folks. I am curious, having just read the post below, what exactly is a Troll????? I have tried through most of my life to live with several adages in mind. Two of the most prevalent follow: 1) The only dumb question is the question not asked!!!!, and 2) Better to be thought a fool, than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt!!! Now, I love to come to the various forums because I like to learn new stuff and see great photos!!!! Even though I have kept Herps for some 48 years, I still consider myself a Newbie. My areas of greatest interest follow: Pits, Kings, Rats and Corns. But if I have time I will visit other places that hold interest just to see what's going on. So you can find me here, over on Garters and Water Snakes, sometimes on Tokay Geckos, etc., etc. In fact you are just likely to find me anywhere (except Ball Pythons and hybrids, for reasons I'd rather not share!!!!). I do not frequently post as I rarely remember my password (hey, you'll all get old someday too!!!!) or my time is limited (when I do have time I tend to saying too much!!!). Does that make me a Troll???? If so, so be it!!!!(In my line of work, so be it=Amen!) Just imagine me as you would one of the Battle Trolls assailing The Walls of Gondor, or as the troll that ravishes the restroom at Hogwarts!!!!

Trolls come to forum JUST TO start arguements and trouble...

Lurkers come in ,maybe alot maybe not...and don't always say much...some never say anything...

...you sound like a lurker...I didn't see any other posts by you ???....

...

...

then there are people that spend too much time in here and open their mouth whether they are correct or not......and can 'oops' it later?...LOL...and don't worry about it...???...

Exhibit A

"Trolls come to forum JUST TO start arguements and trouble... "

No they don't and you have no idea of what you're talking about!

Class dismissed.

It's about intent. Trolls get off on stirring "stuff" up whether they feel strongly about what they're saying or not. They do it intentionally.
Other people just express an opinion they believe in that may start a heated debate.

You can usually tell a troll by their use of absolutes rather than trying to make a clear, compelling case. If I started a post on this forum that said, "All of you who hate hybrids don't know what you're talking about," I'd most likely be a troll just stirring the pot. But if I said, "I like hybrids. I think they're a legitimate part of this hobby because...," then I would most likely be an individual just expressing my opinion.

I know trolls because one of my brothers is a self-proclaimed troll. He loves to get online and start flame wars and then sit back and watch, stoking the fires occasionally with a witty comment. He's taken trolling offline and loves to rile me up, especially if he can get my wife to go along with it. Apparently it's great fun to p1$$ me off.

That's what a troll is. I think there may be a few on these forums, but I think most of the posters, by far, believe in what they're saying.

"Apparently it's great fun to p1$$ me off. "

Thank you for that. It made me laugh. Sometimes I troll for the same reason. It can be great fun to watch someone defend a position. To a degree, I think its OK as long as it does not get personnel and there is some point to it. I love exposing holes in personal philosophy and watching the ensuing rationalization. In case nobody has noticed, purity debate is a favorite of mine!

The cool thing is that sometimes what you thought was a hole is not and the person has thought it out or you figure it out for them or yourself and your own opinions shift. To me its all just part of lively give and take.

We've had a few push and pull debates Tony, if I'd known you were trolling me then, I'd have been a lot nastier.

Seriously, I've enjoyed some of the, "shall we call them friendly exchanges", quite a bit and if they stay on topic w/ out any name calling or bashing I've enjoyed thinking out the subject matter to some type of end.

I wouldn't call that type of thing trolling though.

I've got my eye on you now Tony.
