incubation substrait prefs?

Amanda_D Feb 16, 2011 12:44 PM

There seems a wide variety in what people use in their incubators. I am wondering if any or all substraits are compatible with all snake species commonly bred.

Some go for vermiculite, some go perlite, or moss, or suspend over water.

I am interestid in trying the eggs on plastic grate over water method that has been used with great success with BPs with my kings.

I have used vermiculite in the past but this looks easier.

Do you long time breeders of kings and corns think this will work? Have any of you used this method with colubrids?

All thoughts and info are apreciated.

Thanks in advance,
A

The "suspension" method works well. One change however - instead of the grate over water, you can just put the grate over very wet perlite. This way the moisture will not evaporate as quickly. Also, not great to have standing water below a tiny colubrid hatchling.

My first incubator was along those lines. An aquarium with about 3 inches of water, a small submersible aquarium heater keeping the water about 80 deg. Then I placed two bricks in there and set a plastic box on the bricks and put in more water to just cover the bricks. In the box was ever so slightly damp vermiculite (perlite works, so does Hatch-Rite and the other one too). Placed eggs in the box and covered the box and aquarium.

Sounds like a good set up.

Have you had problems with hatchlings drowning in the water?

No, never. The boxes I used had lids that fit on pretty well. No babies ever got out. Looking back, I should have put something in the water so a hatchling could crawl up out of the water if need be, just in case.
