Waxworms... and their effect on feces?!

spasmolytic Sep 27, 2003 10:34 PM

Still trying to get my smallest female eating good. She ate a few mealworms and crickets after I bought her, then just stopped and refused everything. I took in a stool sample to be examined, but doc said it was not enough, so will try again this week. But his assistant said he did see a lot of yeast in it?? She didn't sound sure when she said it, sounded rather counfused actually, but if thats right what does that mean? I was only able to take one in after I bought some waxworms and she starting eating those, but nothing else. In the last week she went up to 19 from 16 grams. But her stool, for lack of a better description, looks like a big, dark, ball of snot. (sorry) Is that just from that fatty content of wax worms??

Waxworms can temporarily make a geckos stool kind of loose/wet/gloppy I have noticed, I think it is just because of all the fat.

People can get intestinal yeast problems that can cause them digestive problems/diarrhea, gas, blaoating, etc...I have not heard of this in geckos. Yeast feeds on sugars, and since geckos eat insects, they tend not to have much of those, but there will be some in insects stomach. What have you been gutloading your insects with?

I think the process of turning dairy into yogurt converts lactose, I think lactose intolerant people can eat yogurt but I'm not 100% sure. All geckos are lactose intolerant. If anyone knows if yogurt is safe for leos, if it is, then maybe it might be a good idea to feed a little yogurt by dabbing on end of nose for them to lick off, to reduce the yeast. There are internal yeast medications, but I don't know if any of hese have been studied for safety in reptiles. Some drugs that are safe in other animals are very toxic to reptiles.

Really? If so, I'm so glad to hear this. A few days ago, I changed my substrate from sand to paper towels and that very same day I decided to feed 2 wax worms each to both of my geckos for the first time. The next day I noticed their poop was softer and a little runnier. I thought maybe it was some sign of impaction or parasites that I was unaware about. However, when I had them on sand their poop looked perfectly normal.

waxworms main diet is honey, this is very high in sugar and could possibly cause the high yeast content, and yes feeding a few waxies will make their poop kinda icky for a day.

Thanks for the info. I am happy that she is eating atleast now. When I lifted her hide tonight, she was startled as I found her with a mouth full of skin. Glad to see her shed again. Still going to get her to vet, but in mean time, I have noticed urate smearing on her vent. Is this a sign of worms? It wasn't poop, just the hard yellow urate.
