What would you do? II

livinginvestment Feb 18, 2011 10:43 PM

If you had the $$ and starting from scratch, what would be the 6-10 Boas you would buy and what direction would your breeding project head?

I like the direction my projects are going now so if I had zero and was starting again I would get animals similar to the ones I already own...

I would get atleast a pair or 1.2 trio of each

Boa Woman Caramel,VPI T pos, Leopard and Roswell laddertails, and probably another Anery Arabesque as I'm in love with the one I just received...

1. Super Marron Female
2. Double dose Pink Panther VPI Male
3. Hypo Aztec het sharp Female
4. Scoria boa Male
5. Paraglow jungle female
6. Sterling patternless Male

This would make me one happy camper!!!! 8)

Im a big fan of the moonglow projects and putting them in pattern morphs like Motleys, Jungles, Arabesques, because you will get so many different types of snakes in each litter because you will be working with so many genes, its very exciting IMO.

boaphile Feb 19, 2011 11:09 AM

Most will reply with self serving answers. I would get what I liked and could afford. Look around and decide what you like best. I would consider is how common is what you are considering to purchase in the marketplace? If a ton of people are already heavily invested in whatever project, you might want to consider that when making an investment. One other consideration is this; Are the other people who are invested, in whatever project you are interested in, willing to help you protect your investment with their animals in that they have a proven reputation for NOT selling their stuff at blow them out the door prices.

I absolutely agree!

I spend hours scanning the classifieds and forums trying to get a sense of what's new and exciting. Sometimes asking questions in open forums like this sheds light on otherwise overlooked (hidden) avenues. It also vindicates my decisions or alters it. Not by causing regret over the decisions I have made but by questioning the pairing plans.

I have recently invested big into a few select reputable breeders for a number of reasons. One being they are a proven and trustworthy source. Two, they are a proven and trustworthy source, and 3, volume purchases tends to bring the cost per animal down which allows me to get more bang for my buck. To me, the buying process is as enjoyable as the selling process.

I would invest into PP Male to throw at a Keywest or Roswell. Also, making a jungle/Arab het PP to throw at one of the babies 3 years down the road would keep me on my tippy toes.

I am still looking for someone with an 08/09 1.0 Keywest...maybe someone here can help me out?

Thanks everyone.

There are zero 2006-2008 Key West Boas on the planet. In fact pre-2009 there are only three known male Key West Boas. I know of two of them that are not for sale for sure. There are less than a handful of 2009 Key West males in the US that have left the Boa Black Hole, and the people that have them are guarding them like they are worth their weight in gold. I too have a real fondness for the Key West Boas. Then again, I would right? lol

That explains why he guy at Pet Co gave me a blank stare when I asked where I could find them. I guess Roswell's will be the poor man's version? What's gold going for nowadays anyway? lol

I've always walk away with something when I post....thanks.

I agree with what Jeff said. Just get what you like the most and not what you think will sell the best. I only breed what I like to keep for myself. Now to answer your question. I would get some Sunglow jungles, Paraglow jungle, JB Guyana boas for the Rose bloodline and a lot more Brazilian BCC boas. The Brazilians BCC are now one of my favorite boas. I would also get a few more Bolivian BCA boas. My Bolivians have the best personality out of all my boas. BCA boas are very inquisitive / curious boas in my opinion.

Take care
Tom

I would try to figure out projects that would have both short term and long term appeal. This would probably consist of a mixture of "co-dominant" and reccesive traits. Think of a pattern/ color combination that you think could be achieved through breeding and try to design a project along those lines that you would like to work in. The other thing I always recommend is start with buying females first if you are buying recessive traits. Instead of 1.2 VPI T why not try to get 0.3 for a very good price and then get a male next year when they are less expensive; you can probably get them to throw in a het male for free. This way you could have more females available in case one doesn't breed and have a back up het male for the male you purchase the following year. I always think getting females is a good way to get started in recessive morph projects.
Good luck

Great suggestion. My 2011 group will be 3:1 in favor of the females when I send my last check.

Love it!
