humidity

grimreaper Sep 27, 2003 11:12 PM

i hav a 20 gal hight set up for a gtp neo. ive never owned one b4 but im goin to a show in one month and iv always felt that its a good idia to set up the tank alil wile b4 u get ur pet (common sence). ne way the temps r perfict, and i hav branches set up. wen i get it, it should feel perfictly natrual. my only prob is i can only get the humidity up to 65% at the most humid part of the tank. i hav an exo terra water fall in the bak and a large water dish with heat pad under it. ive done all the reserch i could and found nothing to get it higher other then spraying it once or twice a day. iv been around and rased so many snakes and lizerds that need high humidity and never had a problem getting it to right level. but for some odd reason i just can do it in this tank. if ne one can help me with this prob or give me some ussful advise on keeping a gtp it would b greatly appreciated

Everybody has their own methods, so this is just my opinion.

I keep my gtps in rubbermaids, or custom made cages. I find it hard to keep humidity in with a screen lid. I use rubbermaids with a solid lid, and side venilation. Same with my custom cages that are either made out of treated plywood or melamine.

However, if you insist on using aquariums...take the side with the waterbowl over the heat pad, and put plastic wrap, or aluminum foil over that half of the screen...that has worked for me before, I do use aqariums occasionally for quarentine. I have not, nowever, used them for gtps.

Hope I could help
Chris

I have a young GTP in a 10 gallon tank right now, and the entire top is covered with saran wrap. Air fits in to any creves it can, so if you think covering the entire top will prevent the snake from breathing your nuts! There is plenty of open spaces on the top of aquaraiums that you probably cant see, and remember how much smaller pythons lungs are. My humidity is at 80% always and she hasent suffocated yet or had any respiratory problems.

I think the problem is more about stagnant air and mold development rather than suffocation...Stagnant air and mold will greatly increase the chances of respiratory diseases.

the gtps dont need 80-90 percent all day, mist alot before lights out,and in the mourning , they will get blisters, possibly fungus, rot, respiratory, etc if they are always wet. they need cross ventilation, get a humidifier at your local drugstore 30 bucks or so i use the big 5 gal because you dont have to refill so often, works great, just cove the back 80 percent of the lid with plastic, love plexiglass thin stuff from home depot, they also sell great glass aquariums at petsmart that have vents built in the sides, and have a hole with flap in the back for plugs on the heat pad, 50ish for the small, i love to see them so, the rubbermaids dont cut it for me, unless your breeding them and you have alot of them,d
