Gecko Emergency... please reply ASAP!!!!!!

dubumb Sep 28, 2003 01:05 AM

Hi,
this is very urgent... I just gave my geckos a night time check up and i lifted their rock (normal rock) to check on the 2 guys under it... They seemed fine at first and then i noticed the one's tail seemed kinda crushed where it met with his body. I poked him a bit to see if he could move ok and he bit at me and waddled a little since he did not use his hind legs to walk. It seems like he has very minimal usage of his back legs and they are sort of reddish in appearance. I nudged him into a clear dish so i could carefully examin his underbelly and i noticed when i held him up to the light that there was a small darkish spot inside him. Im thinking this must be food since there is no chance of impaction since there is a papertowel substrate.

As he is slowly and painfully waddling around, he sometimes kinda flips on his back and waits and then flips back over... I am VERY worried, and i cannot think of what has happened...

I dont believe hes been attacked since shes the biggest gecko in the enclosure...

Some one please help!

Thanks!

possibly by the rock hide...he should be taken to a vet asap and kept separate from the other gecko to avoid risk of further stress or injury...

I just got done placing him in his own tank which is a 15g. I only put in a water dish and a small hiding hut. He has not moved since he has been in here, but he also seems tired. To minimize stress i wrapped the tank so i will not disturb him when i walk by or anything.

Thanks again to everyone.

It definitely sounds like the rock injured his spine... a vet trip is the only thing one can do, and even then the vet may not be able to do anything for him.

If the injury is minor, your gecko may regain the use of it's limbs. But if serious damage was done, chances of survival are minimal.

Sorry to hear about this.

I awoke this morning and the first thing i did of course was i checked up on my little girl. Well i found her hidden under her hut and i nudged her and she scampered across half the cage the way she normally does. Her back legs are working very very well, and she seems fully recovered. Even the flattened part on her tail in much better, I cannot even tell there was anything wrong with her.

This is what i think may have happened. I believe she was under the rock and she always really smushes herself in there. So i think that the rock much have shifted in a way that pinned her down right above her tail. So, the blood flow must have been restricted, hence the reddish hindlegs. The blood flow recovered and she slowly regained use of her legs. Kind of like how is you sleep on your arm it leaves a press mark on your skin and then you cant feel your arm because it's sleep. I believe that happened, but to a much greater degree.

She looks and seems much better, but i think i'll keep her in her own cage for another day or 2 to ensure that she stays a bit stress free.

A big thanks to all of you late nighters who responded to my post 5 minutes after i posted it at 2:30AM )

Thanks again.

I'm really happy to hear that she is looking normal again... if you learned anything from this it is that you need to get a new lightweight hide. There is way to much risk using rocks, they shift way too easy and I have seen them get accidently dropped way too many times.

Glad to hear the good news!

Looks like i somewhat jumped the gun on the good news... She seems better, but she doesnt have complete control with her back limbs and she has no feeling in her tail and is unable to move it. Either way she is doing a HECK of a lot better than she was last night... but I will be schedualing a vet check up...

It's good that you had a spare tank handy.

I'm no expert here, but is there any possibility that something fell on him? It doesn't sound like a food blockage, because he would still be using his hind legs. My guess would be he's got internal bleeding, but it's only a guess.
