zonata___ what? How about giving us the locale? Looks like a Sierra but I am not sure.
CB from the Greenhorn area of the southern Sierras.
Kerby...
what is the Greenhorn area?
I've never herped in California before. These are CB and I got them from Jaffo, who got them from Brad, who got them from Mitch (who bred them) LOL. It was Brad who said he thinks they came from the Greenhorn area of the Southern Sierras.

Most southern sierra zonata come from the Shaver Lake and Bass Lake areas. I have never heard of an area or town referred to as Greenhorn.
I know it but I'm not going to say where it is here.
then it must be a very small and remote place because at the right elevations you can find zonata in the seirras anywhere there are rocks. There are only a few roads that run through the southern seirras two go to Bass Lake the other to Shaver and anyone with experence can find zonata along the roadside. I have seen 36 z's in a two day period with Brian Hubbs. Most of the known spots (that are hidden)are all torn up by collectors. The irony is you can stop anywhere and find plenty without going to a secret spot.
These are just CB animals that came from people (who I am not sure of)and locale records were not kept. My mistake for mentioning the names in the previous post, obviously in my old age I was mistaken on the events that occured (on how I acquired the snakes and from whom).
The people mention are in no way connected with these MUTT Zonatas. Funny how all strings have been severed.............

thats good since Jaffo, Brad and Mitch are not pouchers. Jaffo would never take any zonatas and give them to calif residents who are only allowed one zonata and must have a license. I can see how its possible to make a mistake and get confused since you never caught anything in calif yourself.
Let's just say that I have lost respect for part of the herp industry. No wonder in the Infantry certain people got "fragged". Call it what you want. Hang people out to dry..... drop a dime.... make people look bad, just to make yourself look good..... yup, he's a Col's "boy".....
What a bunch of hypocrites....hiding NOW, flat out lying...yup, just my imagination,.....
Santa Claus must have put those Zonatas in my Christmas stockings cause they sure didn't come from anyone IN CALIFORNIA WHO BREEDS THEM............
Like I said, I must have made the whole thing up and that picture ISN'T real....

Just to squash a misconception, there is an easily obtainable permit that allows you to breed zonata in California and keep up to 30 total captive bred animals. Anyone can get it. The offspring can also be given away to anyone in or out of the state. FYI
BTW, the Greenhorns are at the southern end of the Sierras. Further south than Bass or Shaver Lake. The zonata from this area resemble those from Bass Lake. Quite pretty. Sorry Aaron but this is not really a secret Mtn range as evidence by the rock destruction in that range. Idiot herpers!

Are there any special stipulations to getting this permit? If this was so easy to get then why are there so many herpers always complaining that they wished they could keep more than two z's?
The anti gun laws are pretty strict in calif as well but I know people who have concealed carry permits. Depends on your record and what county and sheriif you have.It definetly not the norm for someone to get these.
Point is it may be possible but I would like to hear more on how easy it is to get such a permit for zonata????????????
Also does it apply to charina, rosys and other native calif species?? What about the San Deigo (pulchra) are they part of this 30 zonata????????
It is the same permit as the Calif commercial propagation permit for rosies, Cal kings and gopher snakes. Its just the non-commercial side of the permit (same application form) and yes anyone can easily get it.
Stipulations include
1. Does not increase your bag limit. For example you can still have only one wc zonata, but anyone else in your household can also have one so there are ways to have a breeding pair. Breeding loans are acceptable also.
2. The 30 total in possession has to be documented cb offpring minus the wc bag limit for the species. I believe you are only allowed to breed up to 3 species total and the 30 is an aggregate for all 3 species.
3. It applies to all non-protected native reptiles. Sorry pulchra not included, but you can breed the northern Charina.
The DFG is not too vocal in letting people know about this permit, but it is available. I have it for rubber boas.
