I've had this discussion with a couple of friends before. The differences between just having a lot of pets and hoarding them.

We decided that hoarding includes issues such as an inability to care for the animals properly, inability to say NO to more animals, unwillingness to accept help when the number of animals is overwhelming, and complete refusal to rehome, sell, or euthanize animals.

Whereas even though many of us greatly enjoy our pets, if they were negatively affecting our health, we could no accomodate more, etc, we would be able to reduce the number or even stop the hobby altogether. People who hoard don't see those as options.

IMO, if I had to pick one defining characteristic between the two, it would be Health. Health of animals, and one's own health. If either is suffering and the keeper refuses to improve/reduce/get assistance/etc = Hoarder.

I agree. My girlfriend and I have 5 cats. All perfectly healthy, all happy.
To most people, that is too many cats.

Not to mention I've driven past plenty of farms that had 100 or more dairy cattle.... Are they hoarders too? Hoarding has to do with way more than the number of animals.

Of course they will find some idiot who wants to be on TV and makes all responsible keepers and people with captive breeding operations look bad.

to fill those shoes and make "this" all look like we are a bunch of freaks? Hoarders.... when I hear that all I can think about is the people that live in a house of trash... Now let's sprinkle some snakes and herps into it and people may then envision "that" as the new definition of hoarders!
