feeding snakes up from brumation

fliptop Feb 26, 2011 06:13 AM

My kingsnakes just woke up last week. Unlike my rat snakes the last couple of years, these guys stayed asleep the whole time (I let nature set the temps here in west central FL). When my rat snakes would sporadically be up, I'd feed them.

For those that keep their charges asleep the whole stretch, do you start them of with smaller meals or go straight to what they were eating before?

As ever, thanks.

I don't know for certain if it makes a difference. I like to start with smaller items and feed only a couple. Then wait 3-4 days and feed again. If they seem to handle that fine I wait a few more days and go to regular sized meals.

Yeah, I think it's best to err on the side of caution, since they've been sorta shut down for a while.

I brought my trio of alternas up from brumation 4 weeks ago. They are refusing prey the size they were eating last fall, but accepting smaller prey.

that happened with my flordiana; I had them upfor aweek before offering food. They didn't take the chicks or rats but took weaned mice just fine. Then went back to chowing down on rats and chicks the next week *shrug*

Don't worry I have a couple Alterna who I brought out of brumation who still won't eat anything! I think they need a little time to remember they are hungry, lol.

I have only been keeping alternas for a year and half. This is my first time to brumate them. They are definitely not the same in behavior as corn snakes!
