jdecker94 Feb 26, 2011 08:10 PM

okay so today i attended the northwestern berks reptile expo, i bought a wonderful juvenile yellow monitor for 230$. i was wondering if there was a different classification like for yellow monitors with a green tone, kinda like high yellow, yellow monitor. would this be a high green or something? idk if i can add pics to this post, well i should say idk how, i might make a youtube account and take a video of her and post it later on. also yes i know 100% i have a yellow monitor.

thats not a yellow monitor its a melinus. A slight green tone to a melinus is normal, hope you didn't pay yellow monitor prices for a melinus. Yellow monitors are yellow tree monitors

Rhendrickson Feb 27, 2011 01:44 AM

ohh you paid 230 which is normal

omg you scared the crap out of me before i read the next message, i thought i paid 230 for like a 50 dollar lizard. so whats the difference between a melinus and a yellow tree? the last melinus i had that died after a day was straight yellow, not a hint of green. this one is neon green lol like night and day

Varanus melinus is known as Yellow or Quince's Monitor
V .reisingeri is the Yellow Tree Monitor
The confusion lies when V.melinus is called a Yellow Tree Monitor.Using scientific names usually helps prevent confusion.

ok, people call them yellow varinuses ect, its worse then the names to call bearded dragons lol. so i was feeding her today i put a dozen super worms in (she loves em) gone in 2 minutes, a boiled up some turkey, chopped it up real fine and that gone too. shes a piggy little eater lol. is it normal for them to eat this much daily? i dont care if it is, i buy meat in bulk usually, so feeding this little girl wont do me in.

My Doreanus as babies could eat more than 500 crickets a month. You should be feeding them whole prey items, with proper husbandry, they'll grow like weeds and you won't have problems with metabolic bone disease.

yeah, shes loving this turkey, when i was at the reptile show i forgot pinkies, good thing my friend has over like 500 lol. earlier i flipped out, i thought somehow she got out of her tank, even thought i have lip clips on it, i went rampant looking for her in the house, then seen her head sticking out of the eco earth. i didnt know these little guys could burrow so well lol. these are the best lizards i have ever encountered, disposition, diet, size and energy wise.

Im new to varanus my self but I would definitely do some serious reading if I were you. I think you should know what to feed and how much to feed proper names proper enclosure and all those details before you buy an animal.

jdecker94 Feb 27, 2011 07:53 PM

believe me i read up on all of that, they eat almost any kind of cooked meat, the enclosure for when it is an adult is plenty big enough according to care sheets, i had one moron insist tho for an adult varanus melinus you need a setup that 5 deep 10 tall and 10 wide, not that you can fit that into an average house lol. ive heard these little guys like catfish fillets, i dont plan on trying it in the future but fresh catfish is apparently becoming popular in places where catfish is cheap.

eschmit04 Feb 27, 2011 09:19 PM

You need to do some research. A 5 deep x 10 wide x 10 tall. would be an awesome cage for an adult. 3 deep by 8 wide by 7 tall is about as small as I would call acceptable for an adult. Cooked food is not what is best for the monitor. Whole prey items like rats, mice, chicks and even shrimp is much better. They will eat egg, turkey etc... But they do not get all their nutritional needs.

If you dont mind me asking what are you keeping him in now? What is your hot spot at? What is the ambiant temp at? And what humididty range do you maintain?

first answer this, how is it possible to fit a 10 foot high anything into a standard house with 7 foot ceilings?how could you make something 7 feet tall when doorways are less then that? people seem to think floor joists are just something you can move or modify to put a massive lizard cage into a house, well they arent. something 6 feet tall is about realistic if you can get it into the room its gonna stay in. hell ive seen these things kept in rubbermaid tubs as adults, no lie.

Rhendrickson Feb 27, 2011 09:54 PM

Standard 7 foot tall ceilings? I think monitors are left best to people with a little common sense. So you cant put your arm above your head all the way with out hitting the ceiling? You cant build an enclosure inside a room? Not trying to be mean but 7 foot ceilings, really

Even more than that is someone given advice for the best of their animal and act like all the sudden they know more than you. He didnt even know what kind of monitor he bought!!!!

Rhendrickson Feb 27, 2011 10:02 PM

man now someones going to tell him its not a girl hahaha

moe64 Feb 27, 2011 10:26 PM

I would be hesitant to take advice from caresheets, a lot are by people that don't have a lot of experience successfully caring for monitors.Understanding husbandry is necessity before you have to worry about cage size, because without this knowledge you won't have a cage that can support the monitor-no matter what size it is.More important at this juncture is keeping/getting the monitor hydrated-and conditions that keep it hydrated. You haven't actually asked for any advice but we'll give it anyway LOL
