She finally ate

johnthebaptist Feb 28, 2011 10:36 AM

After 72 days my female bairds finally ate but in a somewhat strange way. Maybe someone can explain this to me. I have been offering her small fuzzies the entire time she was on strike. (she can easily put back large fuzzies. She had a small fuzzy with her all night last night and this morning it was uneaten. I acquired a 2010 Sinaloan milk at a show sunday and bought a bag of pinkies. Not sure what made me try it but i decided to thaw one out and offer it to my bairds. She took it right away and inhaled it (it was far smaller than anything i would ever feed a snake her size) but im glad she got something in her belly. Im curious what made her shy away from small easily eaten prey and to go for TOO small of prey right away.

I've seen that with other snakes too; I've never understood it but you're not alone in seeing that happen

Yeah, many snakes behave like that when going into, or out of brumation. It could very well be natures way of gradually getting their internal organs accustomed to eating once again after being dormant for so long, and are much more inclined to accept smaller, far easier digested prey items. This has always seemed very logical to me anyway.
