hot spot

dagu Mar 01, 2011 02:14 PM

What temps do most people keep for the warm end of cage when using aspen for substrate? I just started using it for juvies. With paper I kept bottom of tub at 87. Should I keep it the same? If I shoot the aspen it is only 80 or so on the surface but under it the tub is 87.

I use the same surface temp for aspen or paper. I recently switched to paper because of the problem of keeping my hot spot maintained with the aspen... Mine is about 90 degrees... again... on the surface of the newspaper or aspen. The temp of your heating element (heat tape, pad, etc) doesn't really matter because that's not what your snake is laying on.

Thanks for the reply. I meant the bottom of the tub inside under the aspen. If I have the aspen at 87 and they burrow into it and get to the plastic tub it would be like 94. That's why I was wondering if I should just leave the heat tape the same. What do ya think?

If they burrow and it's too hot for them they'll move. You want the top of your substrate to be the desired temp. In this case 90 degrees.
