Baby boa help

deathatron Mar 01, 2011 10:51 PM

Trying to figure out what happened, I have a 3mo columbian red tail that has been eating great since I got her. I feed her every 7-10 days like I did when my pythons were babies, feeding day was Sunday and now 3 days later I found a half digested fuzzy in her enclosure. I don't know if she threw it up or pooped it out whole, if anyone can help I would appreciate it greatly.

If it was pooped out, it would be more digested IMO. Likely a regurgitation. I'd recommend not trying to feed it for AT LEAST 2 weeks, 3 would be even better. This feeding lapse gives her time to replenish digestive enzymes and such in her GI tract.

I would also feed her less often. 2 weeks minimum wait between meals, even 3 weeks won't hurt her any. Boas don't do obesity as well as some other species. In fact it really reduces their life span.

You might try some of this dusted on the next feed item as well. It will help with GI issues. I use it every few months as a maintenance.

thanks for the link! what a great idea- I was talking to the veterinarian I work for and he was saying some doctors are looking at probiotics in the same way some look at anti-biotics. Instead of giving the animal medicine to kill EVERYTHING in their system, give them organisims that target pathogen's naturally while not harming helpful bacteria and fungi, interesting stuff- Rob

Boas have a much lower metabolism than pythons and it is best to feed them at longer intervals, at least until they deficate the previous meal. Usually a half digested rodent was a regurge. Too large of a food item and too high temperatures can lead to a regurge. How large/old is your Colombian? What are your temps/humidity/set up/hides and heat source? I have been told to wait at least two weeks before trying to feed after a regurge. Bill.

that the heat source is still plugged in and working.

Verify that the cage temps are adequate or if they have changed.
