We took a visit there yesterday, mostly to see the baby gators they advertise. They had a nice enclosure (20x10) with about 20-30 yearlings and about 10 turtles(yes 6-8 inch turtles). There were only 2 basking lights above rock platforms only large enough to fit 1 or 2 gators at a time(i know young gators spend lots of water time but feel it was lacking dry land).I could not find one employee that knew much about gators(and beleive me I asked around).I did talk with a young woman who says she was a pretty knowledgable about gators. When I asked about water temps in enclosure she went over to look in a reference paper. There was no thermometer in enclosure which I think is important.I asked about diet and was told they ate crickets, and fish scraps. These gators were about 2ft. in length, should they be eating fuzzies or pinkies by now? I was told they grow 1 ft. per year until age of 6.Is it possible for that growth rate in low 80'sF water and diet of insects and fish scraps? My gator grew 1 foot per year for couple years and growth rate slowed way down this year(hes 3-1/2 years now).Hes been on whole prey since 1 year old and water temps are about same as Mystic.Because of the lack of staff at the enclosure I was tempted to start playing alligator "speaker" for ALL of the people who were very interested in hearing about alligators. Many folks have questions when veiwing exotic animals, like gators, but there was nobody there.I am going to write to Mystic Aquarium about this and maybe pick up a part-time job from it.LOL
