Albino Dwarf Hamster

nz May 26, 2003 04:15 PM

I have a pair of Dwarf Hamsters that just had babies. The male I had before, he was the father of three beutiful normals. The old female died from natural causes. The new female I got last month and paired her up with my male. They had four babies, to my surprise one is an albino! I guess that makes my male and female het for albino. I could not believe my eyes, the albino stood out the day they were born. Unlike the others no melanin on the eyes or back, looked like an albino mouse pink. I am siked, can't wait until they are fuzzies. I've only seen one albino Dwarf Hamster before, are they rare?

I have RDHams and I started with a white with a black line down the back and a regular agouti. They are cool in that they have like a merle sort of gene and I have had whites with smudges of grey or brown in them. I have had this one group all year and a few litters ago I got a dark charcoal one.....something I hadn't seen at all. She hasn't bred herself yet, so I am interested in seeing what I get. So far all I get is whites with black line, whites, tan and agouti...but they do tend to have various intensities of their colors which is cool.

No they are not rare. You may, however, have a red eyed white, not an albino. If one of your parent hamsters is "frosted" in apperance (platinum gene) all you need is a dilution gene and you'll get a hamster that looks like an albino but is not. I have both albinos and red eyed whites...they look the same.

The female does look different, she has shorter smoother hair and a more golden color and more white on the belly. Is that considered platinum? She is definately different than the male. I checked on the babies today and the normals are getting real black colors. The one that has no malanin is getting a faded line down the back but still has no melanin anywhere else.
