controversial breeding....

thomas davis Mar 06, 2011 10:13 PM

well these have an interesting yet controversial history. these were created or genetically altered manmade mutation done in a lab. they were smuggled into the pet trade but do stir controversy ...my snakes dont know the differance

the father and F1 mother

F1's are an array of silkies and rexes so far all have proven het. for hairless

F2's are a mixture of silkies, rex and hairless approx 50%of these start losing hair in hooper stages resulting in these the totally hairless are like the super and never get hair.

ummmm mice its whats for dinner

Back in the day when I was breeding my own feeders I routinely popped out color morphs from all albino lines. In many respects working with these variations was just as interesting as selective breeding of the snakes. At very least you saw results much quicker given you could have several generations in a single year.

well the cotroversy is ethics, this mutation was manmade by manipulating the thyroid gland causing the hair to fall out. animal rights folks beleive its abonimadable and scientist who created it feel its ethically wrong in that the pet trade is basically profiting from them, like i said my snakes dont know the differance,,,,,,thomas

Those are really interesting! I have long haired mice in my colony but no hairless or Rex. Wish you could ship live mice like shipping snakes! I would love to have some Rex! The ones with no hair on their heads look like a cross between a buzzard and a mouse! LOL!

Some of my "shags":

Some males

Some females
They are big robust mice which came from one short haired brindle male who is still part of my colony. He is pretty old but still going strong.

That's going to screw everything up for locality-specific breeders of mice. It's a terrible way to pollute the gene pool for those "serious" rodent breeders who are trying to keep their lines pure.

If this scientist really gave a flying fig about ethics he would never have created this mutation in the first place. Once something like this is created it is bound to get out of the bag so to speak.

I still think these mice are most interesting. Those buzzard headed ones are a hoot!

They created the hairless mice/rats for cosmetics and perfume companies for testing for skin reactions.
