A little history up date on one red milk

terryd Mar 07, 2011 12:40 AM

Some of you may remember when I posted this little red milk back in 2009, he came out of a really rough neighborhood, as you can see.

His mother is a big rough and tumble het for hypo girl that has eaten her hypo mate in years past. Don't be fooled by the photo below the domestic abuse can be severe for the slightly smaller male.
The male looks to be in charge here, and moving on to some successful breeding which he did accomplish. But unfortunately, I have had to break up a few domestic disputes between these two before with the male nearly losing his life if she isn't in the mood.

Despite these home conditions, and being brought up in a bad neighborhood the little guy fought his way up from these humble beginnings to thrive and rise above his grave conditions. Here he is with a full belly.

And now as a two year old a robust het for hypo (slightly small) subadult L. t. syspila.

Keep an eye on those pairings this year and lets try and put an end to domestic violence in our snake tubs this breeding season.

Syspila Gorilla, a. k. a. the Black Widow.

Here's hoping he rises above his humble beginnings and breaks the cycle of abuse.

Great post, nice pics, even nicer snakes. Thanks.

It's a valid statement Tony, however he seems to sit in between a for sure hypo and a straight up normal.
hypo

Our protagonist from the above story.

Normal

I'm working w/ two different groups of hypo syspila, and both lines give the impression that the head caps and first black boarder of the hypos are always broken up, or mottled, to some degree.
Clearly our protagonist in question has a solid head cap. Which is a big part of why I held him back, he is an interesting looking character. So this is why I call him a het and not a hypo.
Here are a few shots of hypos and what I'm talking about.

Nice solid normal het for nothing Red milk. -Dell

Understand, I have a het I held back that I think is hypo but wouldn't sell it as one.

ON balance though I'd still say that there critter is a hypo. Though the cap is solid on balance the head appears way more clean than a normal or straight het.

In any case a rock solid looking animal!

Tony, he does have something going on for sure, and he keeps getting nicer looking as he ages.
Thanks for your comments.

Cool life story. It looks like he'll make something out of himself.

Yeah, I like him. I like how he looks, his head cap is unusual, and coming out of those nasty looking eggs makes him a little more of an individual to me.

I'm glad you enjoyed the story, and thanks for commenting.

Yeah, hard to believe he made it out at all. I had to keep putting anti-fungle cream on his egg other wise the mold would have taken over his egg too.

DMong Mar 07, 2011 09:46 PM

Yeah, I have done the thin layer of anti-fungal oitment on a few eggs in the past too that seemed to do okay, and they hatched. I think I will try some dry powder sometime in the future, and sprinkle just a tad on any green "fuzz" that starts to form on any future eggs too.

Glad you were able to save the cute little tike!

Dell: Nice story and pics. I like seeing all the variability in Red Milks.

Cole: Nice "Reader Profile" in the latest issue of "Herp Nation."

I thought you were about to say, "he grew up to be a senator,". That's the way most of them write their life stories these days.

DMong Mar 08, 2011 07:33 PM

I must definitely agree with Rusty too bro, that is one super nice shot there Dell!!!

I could see that type of shot very handy and space-saving in books, and especially where the venters are crutial to their meristics, or a specific morph too. For example an annulata that have complete white rings as opposed to many others, or a "motley" or "striped" corn that has no belly pattern at all, etc..

Very cool man, and I see you have perfected this over time too..LOL!

if I shouldn't send in a donation for a deserving little critter that was pulling himself up by the boot straps... for some reason I'm thinking Animal Planet early in the morning... Sarah McClaughlin singing some teary-eyed song while Jason Alexander narrates a heart rendering story.

Nice little post and great pics as always Dell... glad to hear and see you've put the effort into him.
