concerned and confused

dw662002 Mar 08, 2011 07:30 AM

yesterday i went to get my female candycane out of her tub to put her in with a male for breeding purposes. she has had 2-3 sessions and i have observed 2 lockups. she showed no signs that she had eggs in her. when i picked her up i noticed she was in the process of laying an egg. i mean she literally must have just started because just the tip of the egg was out. as soon as i noticed what was going on i immediateley put her back and she went on with the process. that was about 11am.she has not laid no more eggs as of 7am this morning. so she only laid 1 egg. i know they should lay more but what are the chances the she became egg bound? or could she just be withholding the eggs? will she abosorb them? what could i or should i do? thanks for any help

Is the egg a slug? Corns are known to lay slugs before the good eggs. Does she have a moist lay box? Check and see if you feel any more eggs and just leave her alone for a few days. She may have been stressed and just waiting.

I believe it might be a slug. It is an off white/yellowish color. She does have a moist lay box. I tried to feed her but she refused. Just have to wait and see.

Yeah leave her alone and quietly check on her once a day or so but don't disturb her. It's a frequent occurrence to have them lay an egg or two that are slugs before the rest of the clutch. Sometimes the whole clutch can be slugs but don't lose hope yet.

This is true also! I guess I should have mentioned, they usually lay about 10 days after a shed. If she goes much more than that she may get egg-bound.

as originally posted my candy cane laid an egg on mon. 3/7/11. turned out to be a slug. on wed. 3/09/11 she laid another egg. that too turned out to be a slig. then on fri nigt/ sat morning she laid a third egg i believe to be a slug. i dont undetstand the 1 day intervals in between eggs. i thought when they started to lay all though it may take 24 hrs. that they pretty much lay everything at once. any insight to this behaviour? i am thinking a vet visit maybe in order.
