Pyros Get Big Lay Nest

pyromaniac Mar 10, 2011 11:20 AM

The trio. The top saucer is being held up to show them. This whole affair is covered by a box.

Turkey pan full of moist sphagnum moss.

With Plexiglas panel over pan.

With water bowl on top.

This is so the females can have plenty of time to check out the amenities in their habitat, and I can easily check for eggs in the future without pestering the snakes. Idea from Jlassiter; thanks, John!

For my other snakes (pituophis) I am going to go with the turkey pans nested in the substrate thing as well, since the snakes have gotten so big they can barely fit in the little Glad containers anymore.

Eh, I took it out; way too soon to have that in the cage. Talk about jumping the gun! LOL!

I may steal that idea.

Glad you like the idea. I will put it back in when the females show definite signs of being gravid. I want the moss to be fresh when they need it. They still have the Glad containers of moist sphagnum moss for shedding, etc.

By the way, what happened with your gravid house snake?

she's in shed right now; I'm hoping she'll shed then lay. she hasn't done a pre-lay shed at all, but she's stretched so much I'm surprised. Of course it's my first time breeding house snakes too so maybe that's normal? there's a big piece of cork that takes up about 1/2 the cage with some fresh moss under it right now. Hopefully she'll use that.

If it is not too much trouble for you or your snake I'd love to see a photo of her in her current condition.

It's not very dramatic looking in the pictures. Her eyes are clear again so hopefully she'll shed soon. She's in the box I've left in--I figure that, plus the cork with moss under it ought to work?

She's gone from like 290 grams to 360 some.

she bit the camera after that one :D

She is much prettier than I had imagined house snakes to be. No surprise she bit the camera; what pregnant lady would want her picture taken in full bloom? LOL!
