Cool snake Marcel,

Was the snake going on a fast, or are chicks normal for you? My female Russian has only had a few things sine June, and has lost 6 grams since then as well. She refuses f/t, fk, and lv rats, and f/t mice, not breeding them anymore. No big deal, she is only 150 grams now, not big enough to breed till 05 anyway IMO.

Do you have a male for her this year? I remember checking your pics out of the pair you used to have, part of why I got my pair.

My male turns down very little, over 215 grams now, was smaller than the female when I got him last winter. This pic is back when he was around 50 or 75 grams, he is almost as black as your female now, very nice and shiny, really looks good.

In early season my Russians will eat anything. When summer is over they get picky and will not eat mice and rats. They can be tempted witha fuzzy mouse or a chick. They love chick. I feed them chicks every other meal normally. I have a 190 cm male for her (that is 4 inch over 6').. So I will grow her a bit more before I breed her. I have bred a female at 12 months of age when she was close to 4'. Had 8 good eggs that all hatched.

That sounds like an impressive male. I hope to hear good news of you breeding the same time I do in 05'.

Best of luck!

She looks georgeous Marcel... I have been after a female for AGES ! ( Yes, I do mean female Russian rat snake... lol )

These are a couple of pictures of my 6 year old male Russian ( You've already seen these I think Marcel ), he lives in with a female Korean as they are both kept at ~75F...

The two indoor pictures are when he is getting ready to shed, the outdoor image was taken last year.

Yes, I have seen them and I love these pics. Your male seems to be jsut about the size of mine. Mine is also around 6 years of age. The female is so small in my eyes. LOL, Anyone else would say wow, big black snake. But I am used to to sheer size of my male.

NICE SNAKE ! Those pictures are right up there next to Marcels for the best Russians I have ever seen, great stuff.

What do you feed that big boy? Other than fasting, my yearlings can seem to handle biggish stuff. I fed ~60g rats to an adult yellow rat I had, and my 600g Texas Rat takes ~90g rats no problem too. Does that take the smaller meals I read that they prefer?

I picked my female up of a private breeder on the classifieds about 9 months back. There was also a breeder that had some selection of Asian Elaphe at the All Ohio Show I used to attend often that had two pairs, and I nabbed my male from them. Get more and more common, though great to work with IMO.

Hi Jon,

He comes out of hibernation at the beginning of March and is usually eating by the end of March after warming up. I start him on two or three mice for the first few weeks and he'll go up to small and large rats by the end of July. The biggest he has eaten was about 80g which took him about 1/2 hr.

By mid August he will stop eating the rats and down-size all the way to fuzzy mice then stop eating all together during September.
He stopped three weeks ago now but he did have a fuzzy mouse snack at the weekend - left overs from one of the corns.. lol
