Sounds like a spotted turtle, Clemmys guttata. Does it look like this? http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/ligans/animals/m/ar0137_1m.jpg

Spotteds are illegal to collect in most states. Their wild populations aren't doing very well so you should probably let it go where you found it. Captive bred spotted hatchlings are pretty common on the kingsnake classifieds if you want one.

It would help to tell us where you found it...what state, country etc...
and can you get a picture?
is its shell domed or more flattened (like the spotted turtle pic)?
are the spots round or are they mor elike short flecks or stripes?
yellow chin huh? does it have a hinge on its underside?
look like this, maybe: blanding's pics

It sounds like a box turtle. Since you're not familiar with keeping turtles as pets, do the turtle a favor and put it back where you found it. Just take a it few yards in from the road.

May be a baby box turtle. Is it a hatchling. If so best to bring back near where you found it and release it in a safe area off the road. It may not have been slated for survival and you are looking for info on which means you do want to take care of it (which is not the worst thing in the world that could happen to it -- so long as it is cared for properly) but it is better to let it take it's chances (whether it survives or feeds a wild animal). There are lots of captive turtles that need homes and you could get one that suits your lifestyle and needs a good home.

Just a thought.
