Help with identification

wildfyre58 Sep 28, 2003 01:21 PM

My brother recently found a small gray snake with blackish blotches in his garage in northern VA. He looks to be about 15" long but I have not gotten a good look at him stretched out. He is a bit thicker that a pencil and appears fairly active. A pic of him in a coffee tin can be found at:

Help identifying the little guy would be appreciated. The head doesnt look overly triangular so I dont think he is poisonous, but since juveniles are tough to spot I thought I'd ask for help. His eyes are pretty small too so I couldnt tell if the pupils were round or elliptical.

I'm just starting to get brave enough to try and publicly identify some snakes, so don't think of me as an expert. It looks like an Eastern Milksnake to me, although not as red as I would expect.

If you look on the forum lists...under SNAKES is a forum called "What Kind." The experts check there frequently and can give you a pretty solid answer, I'm sure.

It's a cutie, that's for sure.

If I had to guess from your pic, I would say it appears to be a juvenile Black Rat. I could be wrong.
