Fl. Brooks won't stop eating

bigtman Mar 18, 2011 11:33 PM

LOL. Just thought I would say. Boy do they like to eat. When I first got my kings back in January I ordered pinkie mice, peach fuzzies and pinkie rats. I have about 600 all total. And now I am going to be ordering bigger prey. A few days ago I thought I would see just how much each snake would eat, so I put 2 pinkie mice and 2 peach fuzzie mice in each cage. Well when I went in to check on them here's what happened.
Flame brooks (male) Data.. ate them all
Flame brooks (female) Dax.. ate 2 peach fuzzies and a pinkie
Hypo Brooks (male) Walter.. ate 2 pinkies and a peach fuzzie
Axanthic Brooks (female) Annabella.. ate 2 peach fuzzies and a pinkie
So I had 2pinkies and a peach fuzzie left. I didn't want to waste the prey so I put all of them in will Data, just to see if he would eat one more item. Oh by the way when I went in to check on them, Data waqs out looking for more. Afetr I put the rest in with Data I went back in to check just to see if he would eat one. He ate them all LOL. So he had 7 prey items inj one feeding. So I went and placed and order for normal fuzzies mice and hopper mice. I might try him on a pinkie rat but it still might be just a little to big. I will post up dated pictures in a few days after they get a chance to dijest their meals.

"So he had 7 prey items in one feeding"

Be very careful there. any kind of snake can regurge if conditions are not optimum and the prey items are lined up all the way up to their neck away from their stomach, ........even floridana.

Contrary to what some here might recommend, there is a safe limit to everything.

You had better make darn sure they have belly heat in the low to mid 80's so they can digest those huge meals.

Yes, floridana can eat pretty large meals, and are indeed very voracious feeders, but there really isn't any reason to see what their limit is in my opinion. Regurges can cause huge problems, and can put their health in great jeopardy.

Thanks Doug I might have gotten carried away. But they do have belly heat it is around 88 give or take a degree. Also the air temp is from 72 at night to 76 during the day. It's starting to warm up here in Vegas. I will go back to normal feeding. It was just one time. I normally give them one pinkie and one peach fuzzie, every 4 to 5 days. Thanks again Doug

Yeah Tom, not to harp on this , but once a snake starts regurging it could stifle his appetite at the very least and in worse cases start him on a road to other problems. Keep him warm and leave him alone for a while, lol. They sure can eat though huh?

I guess you might have meant me?

I guess i don't know anything about Florida kings.

My guess is the OP has been reading a few posts on here and is still feeding rodents that are to small for his snakes.

They won't regurge. Period. THEY ARE FLORIDA KINGS!

Not so with other snakes. But since I keep a few *cough* Florida kings and stuff them like they should be. I never ever EVER had one regureg. Not a single one!

If you got hot underbelly heating, they are fine. I would turn it up a few degrees though. They know where to sit if it gets to hot. They just know what is best for them . More then we think they should or should not do.. With this species we need to let them make the decisons. I wouldn't recccomend this with other kings though. Just the Florida kings.

BTW I would not switch them over to rat pups. My advice.

"They won't regurge. Period. THEY ARE FLORIDA KINGS!"

I hate to differ here but, They will! Should we take a poll to see who has had Floridana regurge? All that have had them regurge at some point say Aye!
