Question about feeding..

Lucien May 26, 2003 04:49 PM

I've done all the research and everything on my new baby sav.. so I've got a good setup and everything. Basking temp 110... cool side 83... What I'm wondering is how much he should eat at this age... He's only about 8 inches long. At the moment he's taking like 2 crickets and 2 superworms at a time. Won't touch pinkies yet..has eaten a bit of chicken.. took that once but not since and I've offered it. I guess I just want to know.. how much is enough in a day.. etc etc. I keep a dish of superworms in there daily..

Please don't think you have his husbandry down pat from reading one or two sources. Who knows who wrote them? And where are their animals now?

Look to your animal for answers. He is a baby, -is he gobbling down food like crazy? No? Then something's up.

Your assingment, should you choose to accept it, is to find out what. Pardon me, you bought the lizard, you did accept it.

My first guess is, the temps, but this is the internet, and its your job as keeper to try different things.

I really wish people wouldn't jump to conclusions about someone's knowledge of a subject just because they ask a question like.. "How much should they be eating?" I didn't just read.. one or two sources... I've been researching this for close to a year before I decided to get him.... He is my first monitor.. but that doesn't mean I'm ignorant of what his needs are. I do know, this is supposed to be a forum for the sharing of knowledge.. not for the jumping down of people's throats for a simple question. He IS eating....I was just wondering exactly how much was enough for a baby his size so I that I can offer the right amount.. thats all.. His temps are fine... his enclosure is big enough...he has a temperature gradient.... So next time... please offer helpful information instead of jumping on someone for a simple question.

Hey, you were the one who wrote your basking spot was 110.
Gee, you really did a lot of research..
So was that a typo? Or is it really that low? Good friggin' luck with your lizard.

I WAS trying to be nice to you, jackass. Sorry I wasted our time. D.

Just feed him what he will eat and don't worry about it. Take care and good luck with him.

At that size, feed it all the crickets it wants to eat.My Blackthroat at that size would eat 15+ crickets daily.I would raise the basking temp up some and lower the cool side to around 75.Just my thoughts.

Thank you for some of the replies... And to those who like to insult someone's intelligence...I don't need your replies thank you anyway. I've had this monitor 5 days...and yes I may be inexperienced with monitors but I am not inexperienced with other reptiles... This wasn't an impulse buy...it wasn't some buy because I thought it was cool... So instead of ridiculing maybe some of you would like to grow up and offer honest information instead of criticism..or at least offer CONSTRUCTIVE criticism..not mere ridicule.
