Speckled's

varanid Mar 21, 2011 01:08 AM

Although my male speckled died, my two females are doing fairly well, but they don't seem to be growing much. They're healthy looking, holding a fairly good weight to length ratio--but they're both under 200 grams. I know speckled's aren't a particularly small subspecies, so I was wondering if anyone else had noticed how their growth stacked up to california and florida kings? My bigger female is only like 170 grams. The smaller is 160.

I keep 'em warm (88-90 on the warm end), give 'em hides (cork scattered around the tub in 2-3 places) and feed fairly regularly; about every 5 days or so at this point. Prey animals tend to be 15% or so of body weight--it obviously varies a bit but that seems to be normal--the mice are around 20-25 grams. Vet said they're fine when I took them in after the male died.

Yeah I have two females that I was hoping to get up to size for breeding this year, but they don't put on size like my Florida Kings. Like you said, they eat well and look great and healthy put just don't explode like Floridana. My Florida's are growing much faster with just a little pushing.

yeah, I've seen photos of big ones that other people caught down in the gulf, so I know they can get 4'ish. Of course some are apparently mature and full grown at 30" so...

I agree....Our Texas Holbrooki are a much smaller version of the Louisianan Holbrooki.......

But our Texas Holbrooki are much nicer looking in my opinion.....Some with deep yellow almost orange speckles, laterals and ventrals....I've seen hatchlings that had orange/red ventrals around Port Arthur all the way down to Port La Vaca.........

One of my favorite Getula........

Louisiana actually has some nice Speckled Kings. The kings in Eastern LA tend to be more prominently banded and ugly (in my opinion), but in other parts of LA they can be patternless with bold yellow speckles.

I caught this 2 footer in LA just a couple weeks ago:

And walked up on this pair mating the next day:

Those are pretty nice Nick......Western Louisiana Holbrooki are nicer than the Eastern version imho, too.......

Those ones you pictured has to be west of Lake Charles, right?

Nope, they are all from east of Lake Charles.

From what I've read, the very best ones are in the coastal marsh in Southwest LA, though I didn't get around to exploring that area.

I can't speak for all localities, but the ones in New Orleans would get close to 5 feet or better.

And I thought everything was bigger in Texas. I live in deep SE Tx, and I never see them above about 3-1/2 ft long here. Like John said though, they have great coloration. I don't see near as many now as I did before hurrricane Ike flooded the area. I think a lot were pushed inland or died during that one. Hopefully they will rebound soon.
