Help! Pinesnake Escaped!

sandhisser Mar 21, 2011 08:02 PM

So I had a 5 ft. really fat black pine escape her cage today and I am very upset. Anybody have any ideas on odd places to look in the house? I've pulled out the refrigerator and stove, every piece of furniture, etc. checked corners, closets, drawers, mattresses, etc. and nothing. I had a window cracked near the cage and I fear the worst.

Aside from that I have been trying to figure out how she got out of her cage. I kept her in a 40 gallon breeder with a sliding top and a clip to prevent the top from sliding open. There was no possible way the lid could have slid enough for her to escape. After inspecting the cage multiple times, (out of shear, how the hell did this happen), I found that she seemed to have been powerful enough to break the adhesive off the tops framing and push the entire top of the aquarium off, meaning the part that the sliding screen slides into. So a word to other keepers since these are common tanks for housing larger species. Do not trust the adhesive! Lesson learned here, that cage will never be used again.

First off, hope you find her. I had a bull snake escape once but I found him right away under a wooden platform outdoors (summer time and the front door wide open!) So if you have anything like plywood or other stuff laying around near your partially open window maybe look there. My Pacific also got out the front door but she just went off the front steps into the ivy, and was found quickly.

I use those type cages for my kings and gophers. I have two 30 gallon and two forty gallon tanks.

I made these hardware cloth tops to prevent my cats from pushing through the screen lids when they wanted to roost on top of the tanks.( my cats are real bowling balls! LOL!) If I had a snake strong enough to push the screen lid up I would bungee the hardware cloth cover down. Those screen lids are rather feeble considering how strong snakes are. I think the cage designers had lizards in mind more than snakes. The cloth cover on the one cage is a winter time thing.

Keeping cats allows man to cohabitate with tigers. Keeping reptiles allows man to cohabitate with dinosaurs.

With the exception of 1 snake, I've found all my escapees within 6' of their enclosure. (all inside my snake room)
