...another newbie to to snakes......couple Q's.

nasr_36 Sep 28, 2003 04:01 PM

Hi. I keep other reptiles and amphibians, but am making my way over to snakes now. I already decided on BP's before, but my mom thinks they turn into huge hideous beasts (ughh........mom's), so i (or she) decided on a corn instead. O well, fine with me.

Well, enough of my life story, lets get down to the Q's.

1. I have a spare 20g high with an incandeascent and a screen lid. Im using paper towels as substrate, a waterdish, and some driftwood. Will this be sufficient for a baby? (ie, is it too big? Should i use a 'shoe box' instead? Or is it "the bigger, the better"?

2. How big should the prey be for a hatchling?

3. Can they climb glass? Will a screen lid with a plastic lock attached be ok for security?

4. Whats the cheapest morph you can buy? ...i dont want to drain my parents wallet. Well, i do, but they wont let me...

Anyway, i appreciate the time taken to answer the questions. Dont just flame me and tell me to research, because thats what im doing.

Well, thanks for the help.

Moe

albino is probly the cheapest morph, then again, if you go to a reptile show you could egt many other morphs for cheap..a 20g high is too big for a hatchling, and as corns are terrestrial, you would be better off with a 20 long (when it's an adult). as a hatchling you could get plastic shoeboxes or even a 10g tank..i think theyre only like 20$..you should have heattape or an under tank heatpad to one side, with a hidebox on each side..if your gonna use driftwood be sure to bake it or boil it or whatever to get all the bugs and bacteria out of it..make sure your waterdish is heavy enough so the snake doesnt tip it..

at a petshop your looking at anywhere from 50-150$ but at a show your looking at like 10-40$

Just use a heating pad, the same type you would use on yourself, with a 3 setting dial on it to control the temperature.

Baby cornsnakes feed on pinky mice and as the snake grows bigger, increase the size of the baby mice.

The 20H will probably be ok. If the snake doesn't feed well, you can always buy a shoebox container for a couple bucks that will work for a few months until the snake gets bigger.

Hatchlings will eat pinkie mice. At a couple months old they can move up to fuzzies, and so on.

I don't know on where you're planning on buying a corn, but if you have on in the area, a reptile show is probably the cheapest place. The most inexpensive 'morph' besides a normal is probably amel, but the other popular morphs like anery, okeetee, snow, hypo, ghost, etc. usually aren't that expensive. For example, I bought my okeetee for $15, amel for $20, ghost for $30, and my hypo for $25.

No, i didnt go to the tottaly pets show. It sucked? Well, im glad i didnt waste $8.00!

Yea, ive been to three Mississauga (where i live) shows so far, but havnt bought anything. As for the PCPC, theyre ok. Theyre pricing is expensive, and isnt very clean. IMO, The place is mostely run by rockers who dont know their asses from their brains...but its ok.

Are you going to the next show?

Talk to you later.

yeah another Canadian!

Check the classified on the Canadian site too (www.kingsnake.ca) as well as the forums there. I found a breeder in Barrie who sells his corns at a pretty good price. (1/3 of the cost the local petstore was charging for their baby corns..of the exactly same type!) Anyway, you can check his webpage for prices and contact information:

The Toronto Reptile Expo is November 23, just in case you are interested in the time. I am hoping to have the funds to head there myself though I won't be looking for corns, well, at least I dont' plan on picking any up but you never know.

i seriously can't wait! i know my dad won't allow me and will get really mad.....but im planning on getting a butter corn no matter what! i saw one last time for like $85! and they usually cost about $200 in canada! so it was pretty cheap......yeah ur right PCPC is kinda nasty.....but they do have really cheap feeder mice and stuff =)

so what kinda corns u got? i only got an okeetee thats about 2 months old.....feeding well but i havent seen him shed yet lol
