I have gotten mixed opinions about mixing herps...

lele Sep 28, 2003 04:38 PM

Here's my situation. Jamaica, my brown anole, is intimidating one of my green's (all females) and I am really worried about her health. She(green) seems to be losing weight and I never see her eat or drink. She(green - sorry, no names yet) and the other green are fine. I have done some separation trials and I think Jamaica needs to be on her own. Well, I have other herps and limited space. I am thinking of putting Jamaica in with two very small house geckos (nocturnal) in a new 10 gal setup. Some folks seem to be totally opposed to mixing spp and others say they do it and it's fine. As the geckos grow I would have to movew them all to a larger tank and/or separate Jama from them. But for now I would like to have the geckos and Jama together. My only other alternative is to put Jama, by herself in a little 2.5 gal.

I would like to hear from folks who HAVE mixed herp species and what their experience has been. I don't want speculation or what you have read or heard - because I have, too I am in a sort of desperate situation and need real life experience - thanks!

I haven't mixed, but I see browns, greens, house geckos, and more living in the same space outside. Even outside, it's obvious which species take rule over others. So, here's the breakdown. Browns are aggressive and territorial, and won't mix well with greens and especially not house geckos in a small enclosure. House geckos aren't nocturnal, they're crespucular, and do share some of their awake time with browns. I can't remember ever seeing house geckos and greens interacting, but it's probably better if you try putting them together first, however, I don't think the situation is going to work. I think you're going to have to get a 10-gallon and stick your house geckos in there.

I know you from cham forum, too - right?

Anyway, thanks so much for the info. I just moved the geckos into a 10 gal last night and I was considering putting Jamaica in there. I think I will isolate her altogether and see what happens with just my greens. If the sad, stressed one gets better I will either get another brown for Jama or maybe find her a better home.

I had always been told that the gecks were nocturnal but I do see them often during the day and certainly around dusk (I am rarely up by dawn LOL!) so being crepuscular makes sense.

Thanks!

How many geckos do you have and what species are they? To be honest, depending on the size, a few house geckos can be kept for a while in enclosures smaller than that... I mean, that, it's much better to put them into a smaller container than have an anole in it.

It's far better to keep two house geckos in a 2.5-gallon (temporarily) and an anole in a 10-gallon than vice versa. However, understand that no adult anole should be kept in a 10-gallon, not even singly.

Currently the two geckos are in a 10 gal (one baby, one juvi - both less than 3" s/v) and they are going into a 20hi. My 3 anoles are in a 30hi and my original question was housing one anole, 2 small geckos in the 20hi.

Alrighty, so you have a 10-, a 20- high, a 30- high, and a 2.5-gallon aquarium? Or you are getting another large one?

For the sake of the animals, the geckos are fine in a 10 (what species are they?), and whichever anole species there is two of should go into the 30-, and whichever species there is one of should go into the 20-gallon. If you have an equal number of browns and greens, the larger should probably go to the greens, although it would depend on their size and even how active you see them as because browns tend to be much more active, although added height will always benefit greens.

I'm still kind of confused on the scenario, but I hope I've helped.
