Plant experts...need some input..m

trinacliff Sep 28, 2003 04:58 PM

I was just at our local nursery, and I went around buying a few plants that I knew were safe...then as I was going around, I saw a few that looked either good for climbing or coverage...and they were cheap and pretty...so I bought them, and now I need to know if they're ok to use in cham enclosures or not (not Veiled, so eating leaves is not really an issue).

The containers say:
1) Evolvulus - Blue Daze
2) Salvia

Let me know if you know anything about them...I can't find them on any of those lists of safe/toxic plants.

Thanks!

Hey Kristen,

The Evolvulus "Blue Daze" is a really pretty plant, isn't it? You could grow that year round outdoors where you are. I had one for a few years but had to bring it in each winter and put under lights and after awhile it looked crappy so into the compost it went! Oh, that's not what you wanted to know, huh?

You shouldn't have any problem with them. They are related to morning glory, bindweed, etc.

Salvia - need more info. The genus salvia is commonly known as sage, the herb - and there are a LOT of them. Need either the species (Genus is first word, species is second in lower case and both in italics) or a good description. Is it in flower? what color? are the leaves fragrant (some think they smell like cat pee!). All sage have volatile oils - thus culinary use - but it REALLY varies depending on species.

Go here to get an idea of the variety! Hopefully the tag says more than Salvia

Thanks Lele! I'll try to get more info on the Salvia for you. Unfortunately the pot only says "salvia"...bummer. Also, I can't remember if it said anything more at the store...I looked at SO many names that my head was spinning.

Great about the other one (see, I already forgot it's name...LOL!)...that makes me happy...it kind of vine-ish, so it will be great for a new baby Carpet.

Thanks so much for your help!!! Oh...check your e-mail...hehe
