New to me??? Black pine snake QUESTION

Max0331 Mar 29, 2011 11:07 PM

Hello. So this is my first year breeding Black pines. Or atleast attempting to do so. I have bred a multitude of kings and milks but am noticing some funny behavior the last few days. I got a late start with my black pines and they are just coming out of brumation and taking food. My 2007 female acts like she is on drugs. Constantly cruising and searching. She in the back room right now and I can hear her rootoing around and moving way more than I have ever seen before. Id expect this from a "horny" male but have any of you ever noticed this wildly active behavior from your pit females? Thanks A LOT for any input.

My big female northern get really active periodically and cruises just like a horny male. I think they may be intent on actively leaving a scent trail ...just my guess.

...and dig this, I have two '09 females pines that have just gone off-feed! and one that has become very stubborn ...like wtf? Don't have clue what to make of that.

The scent trail thing was what I was kinda thinking. So I guess thats a good think that if that is the case it tells me she wants to be found. She is starting to go blue so hopefully soon she sheds and really starts driving the male wild. How big are your 09's?

Funny thing, I just these posted on the new FHF Herpeteculture forum a couple days ago.

The links are to graphs of the snake and meal weights over the last year. All these are '09s. Sorry there's no lenght data but it's such a pain to get accurate measurements. All these are between 4 and 5 feet.

'09 Black Pine Female - probably about 1000gms. today.

What a trip. I only see that out of my males. I have no idea why a female would act like that.

Have you introduced them together yet?

Max0331 Mar 30, 2011 09:12 PM

Not yet. My male didnt keep his weight nearly as good as my female did over the winter so, I want to fatten him up before I even let him smell her. Infact I just put a live chick in his cage and came back to a loud crash. He hit that sucker like a freight train. then I see a huge red smear on the side of his tub. My first thought is that the chicks beak impaled him. But What had happened was he hit that chick so hard it skinned half the chick. Pretty gross. But kinda neat to see the effects of their power.

That's pretty cool. I think that is a good idea, because a lot males wont eat once they are introduced to the females at least until breeding season is over.
