It seems he really likes chicks!
That snake reminds me of when I lived in southwestern Michigan and kept chickens; there was a big black snake who sometimes would steal chicks and eggs, but it did such a bang up job on the rodents in the chicken coop how could I begrudge it some chicken once in awhile. The funniest thing was one time I found this snake coiled up under a sitting hen. It looked like she was trying to incubate it, since it had eaten her eggs already.

That is funny! Such a good hen mother she was! Hahah.
You know a black rat snake is considered to be a real good find in Michigan?
I guess that was what it was, a black rat snake. My farm was bounded on the east by a big cornfield with a creek bordering some of that, and a swamp at the north end of my farm. One time in the summer I was walking the outskirts of this corn field hoping to bag a pheasant and came upon a strange scene I will always cherish; several dozen big black snakes where all poised at the edge of the corn field with their heads quite high up looking all in the same direction into the corn, like soldiers preparing an advance. Oh, for a camera!
I didn't keep snakes then (35 years ago), but have always liked them, and never killed any that were on my property.
